What Car To Buy With 10K?

So my youngest brother is looking into buying a car for himself.

Basic parameters :

- has 10k to spend
- doesn't care about "style" or "cool" factor
- needs reliability and, if possible, a warranty
- good gas mileage as he travels 300 miles to and from school over holidays via his car.
- "non car person" friendly.. he isn't a mechanic by any means
- safe

Was looking at a liberty which I assumed was a poor choice. I suggested a CR-V if he wanted a small SUV.

Any thoughts?

I'd buy a Honda with the best combination of options and mileage within that budget. I happen to like the 06-07 Accords and they can be had for that price with decent equipment and miles.

haaaa...tell him to go scouting for Toyotas/Hondas. Never understood how someone can drive a boring/slow car year round and not care.

The accord is definitely on the list. I told him to also look at Scions but am not 100% certain that was a good move...

fully agree. I'd rather have a quirky rover that requires love than something that works fine every time i turn the key.. but different strokes for different folks. Knowing my brother, he'd be all about a "cool car" for a few months.. at which point the "love" for it would go away and he's just be annoyed by whatever inconveniences came along with it

Your brother sounds like a responsible tax paying citizen. Kudos to him for being personally responsible.

I say CRV or 4runner.

Honda Fit. Much easier to find than an unmolested Honda Civic.

Early 00's VW Jetta TDi can be had for much less than $10k and run forever especially with the MT. No warranty but one can be had for ~$7k and dump the rest into maintenance of the non-drivetrain bits.

I see this a lot, but this seems inconsistent to me. I'm assuming he doesn't drive much at school beyond a short < 5mile commute.

If he's driving 300 miles one way, about 2-3 times per semester--8 legs total of 2,400 extra miles. The difference in gas costs between say 18mpg (truck) or 28 mpg (sedan) or 38 (civic) is $ 68 per year from the sedan to the civic. The truck is still only $211 more.

If he drives a lot during the summer, sure say so, but to factor in a tiny amount of miles and gas dollars for trips is crazy.

He should buy any car he wants.

Lexus es if he cares about a nice ride and quiet. Very reliable. Decent looking. Ok gas milage.
I have to recommend you steer away from the crv. My girlfriend has one and its a pile. Gets 19 mpg tops in the city. Like 21 highway.

CR-V sounds like a good choice. 4runners are awesome but a bit heavy with gas. Another good one would be an older Acura TL or TSX even.
