its also incredibly noisy/loud on the highway. aside from those issues, it's been a good, not great, car. i'm looking to move on from mine sometime in the near future.
Its a first car for someone who is not a car enthusiast. The 4cylinder is perfect for his purpose.

Maintenance wise, it will be a bit more than a Honda or Toyota, but since the VQ has a timing chain instead of a belt, you wouldn't have to worry about it. I would look for a 2001+ because it has less issues than previous years. We ended up selling it around 100K miles for 10K a few years ago. Never had any issues, was decently quick, had good average MPG and was AWD.

You drive the lowest model of a 13 year old car, the average camry is worth more than your car.

Im sixteen years old i dont need something of great value. And, you cant pick up bitches in a Toyota Camry(now the bimmer, that's a different story). The yota may be worth more, but I'd rather have my 13 year old bimmer than a brand new Camry. Camry's are ****! My BMW has never broken down or been towed (knock on wood). How many recalls has Toyota had over the last 36 months?! The BMW 323i is a much better car.

Eh... VWs can be problematic. Generally nothing catastrophic, but little things.

German fun-to-drive-ness is better than Toyota/Honda!

Anything from that group (besides Porsche) has very suspect build quality.

How about a Mazda 3? Impreza? They're at least a tad exciting...

If he's only looking for practicality and reliability, a Honda Accord or Civic would be the best choice

You won't be any better off with a E90. Best to avoid them and find the groups of decent people. Track/autox guys tend to be some of the most unbiased people I've come across...

Is someone jealous because their first car wasn't a BMW? Sorry?...

Civic are piece of S.Hit cars, they are weak a rock on the freeway would break through the body panels. Hell a 20 year old bmw will be safer but thats not what we are talking about. If you hate this person who tell him buy a shitty econ car. People here have no idea what 10 grand get them.

Accord V6 - Yes the transmission is a weak point but you can get a transmission for next to nothing. The 2.4 is terrible, fuel economy is only better if you keep it under 2k rpm which you wont because its hideously weak motor.
- Altima
- Mazdaspeed 6, (the three is just a civic, but not as reliable)
- GTI (holds the value)

Depends. What do you think about catastrophic electrical failures and impossible to DIY maintenance? Unless you're talking diesel, in which case my previous statement is void and you should start looking for one.

FWIW, here's the general premise of every one of these "which car should I buy" threads:

1.) OP asks legitimate question about a new car for himself or someone close to him and offers known criteria about what said car should contain.
2.) All the 16 year old kids on here with 13 year old 323i's come into this thread offering recommendations of buy an E36 M3, E46 M3, and every other possibile car except for the one the OP wants.
4.) The posts of the few people who actually know what they are talking about get drowned out in the flood of bullsh!t that flows out.
5.) Arguements break out about which car is better than another regardless of whether either car even meets the OP's criteria.
6.) Thread continues downward spiral.
