3 Americans killed in Algerian Hostage Crisis

Surprised this isn't getting more coverage or debate - it's even a minor headline on Fox News on the front page.

At least 37 foreign hostages and an Algerian died in the terrorist seizure and ensuing special forces assault on an natural gas plant in Algeria, the country's prime minister said Monday.

Five other hostages are missing from the In Amenas complex and could be dead, Prime Minister Abdul Malek Sallal said.

Before Sallal's statement Monday, other countries and companies that employed foreign workers at the sprawling plant had confirmed a total of 29 hostage deaths.

Among the dead were three Amercians, according to a senior U.S. administration official who confirmed two of the deaths Monday. One American had been previously confirmed as having died in the attack.

The Algerian state-run news service APS said 29 militants also died in the standoff, which ended Saturday after four days when Algerian special forces stormed the complex for the second time to free hostages. The government said it did so because the militants were planning to blow up the installation and flee to neighboring Mali with hostages.

Not surprised. This attack was the response for Western (French) intervention in Mali. I brought the topic of Mali up a few months ago and it went largely ignored. Mali has been an AQ safe haven. It is no surprise that an AQIM affiliated group was behind it.

Algeria certainly will be under criticism with their lack of cooperation with US and British governments over hostage rescue teams. But of course I wouldnt expect Algeria to be one to negotiate with terrorists. They have had their problems in the past and they want to send one message to would be attackers.

This situation won't get debate here. Chase can't blame Obama for this one.

That's kind of the point. Americans died in Benghazi and it was all outrage. Americans die in Algeria and it's a blip on the radar. So are their lives any less important than those killed in Benghazi? Yes, I understand circumstances are different, but both instances were attacks driven by extremists elements.

Benghazi was big mostly because it was used as a catalyst to attack Obama. The extreme right blew it up so the rest of the lemmings followed suit.

To the best of my knowledge there has not been a false narrative/cover up being trotted out about this incident.

Which again makes it similar to Benghazi. Big difference? No election going on, no reason to artificially inflate for (hopefull but unrealized) political gains.

Benghazi was about the false narrative and cover up. As this doesn't have that, there is no comparison to be made.
