In my years here I believe I have only seen 2 of these on here. One was POS car, and the other was real clean but on West. GLWSearch, but honestly may take a while.

Pardon my ignorance, but why not just go with a Steptronic?

steptronic = automatic transmission that can be controlled manually (fairly decent, especially the later, non 323i/328i units)
smg = manual gearbox that is controlled electronically (cool concept, but a pos- pumps, relays and slave cylinders fail)

Unless I had an M, I would prefer a steptronic if im not a manual kind of person.

In that case, you're in great shape, as 80% of the 330ci units that you see on Autotrader etc. as "Automatic" are the same thing as "Steptronic." You'll have plenty to choose from.

However, if you're like me, you'll make it hard by looking for the handful with the Premium Package with wood trim delete. You get painted silver instead. Looks less like a Jaguar to me!

Envynyce46 - if you look elsewhere, just narrow your search to 2004 and 2005 models - these were the only 2 years SMG I (or SSG as some people refer to it) was offered on the 330i/330ci (it was also available on the 325i/325ci in 2004 only)

If you want SMG, you're not going to be happy with paddles/steptronic. I don't know much about adding paddles to the steptronic.....either way, it's not the same thing as SMG. The SMG is a manual gearbox minus the 3rd pedal. The Step is a true automatic transmission. From what I recall, the SMG I is slower shifting version of the SMG II gearbox found in the M3. If you really want the SMG, get it. The step is not the same thing, even with paddles attached.

I owned a 2004 330ci with SMG before. I sold it! But my suggestion is, NOT TO GO WITH SMG of any kind. They gonna bring you up with tons of troubles. Yup the smg gives you true feeling like a manual tranny with clutch does. 1st and 2nd gear a lil jerky, there is also a delay between gear shifts (in auto mode) which feel like a manual . Shifting by paddles on steering wheel is a lot of fun. But I have changed 3 smg relay in 15k miles, 1 smg pump at 75k miles....... and it's going to be more as its age and mileage go higher. IMO, if you like a manual get a true manual with the 3rd pedal for clutch. Want an auto? Get a step-tronic ( full automatic tranny) then. It's just my suggestion, still your decision.

to get paddle shifts on your auto, you need to get a steering wheel from a non-m e46 with smg or an M, as far as I know

If interested my car is for sale, you can pm me for details.
