Cali guys help! actually all guys/ gals help!

Hey!

Planning a trip to California during 3/27- 4/1

Renting a car (prob hybrid)

Getting to L.A. then driving to Vegas and staying at the Paris hotel. Leaving Vegas on the 28th and heading back to L.A.

Anything particularly nice to do? I heard great things about BIG SUR, PHC, L.A. etc.

Anyone have any good hotel recommendation in L.A.?

Thanks in advance.

Each coaster here and totally clueless.

Why are you flying into LA only to get into the car for a drive to Vegas? Doesn't make any sense.

Wasn't very well planned out, more of a spur of the moment thing. I was with my gf and we decided we wanted to go to L.A., two mins later we were on Kayak booking tickets at a bar.

Plus, don't really mind seeing California and going for a drive. Been to Vegas in the past, had fun, flew there and didn't get to see the country.

Anything particular to do in L.A.? Anything fun to see? nice places to stay in?

Fair enough. I've made the drive before and it was pretty boring since it is just desert for hours on end.

I prefer SD over LA, but there are things to do in both cities. Plenty of tourist attractions to keep you busy. It has been several years since I've been to either, so any suggestions I give would just be the generic stuff - Santa Monica pier, PCH, etc.

LA to Vegas drive sucked for me. Ate a ticket in Nevada. The plane ticket would've worked out better and save a boring 4-hr drive.

I'm sorry about your experience, this may sound crazy, but I live in Manhattan and barely get to drive anymore if at all. I actually don't mind getting into a car and cruising.

Hopefully no tickets though, that would be a bummer!

LOL, only an ECer would fly to LA and then drive to Vegas. And think Big Sur is anywhere near LA. We really need to start exporting maps east of the Mississippi so ECers can have some sense of the friggin distances involved in travel here.

OP, with no traffic, it's about 4 to 4.5 hour drive from LAX to the Strip. You have to cross the entire LA and Inland Empire metro areas just to get to I15 north towards Vegas, so if you're doing that at rush hour, you'll want a bullet in your brain by the time to you get to Victorville and you'll still have 3 hours to go. It can be a 7+ hour drive with traffic.

Options:
- Change your tix, fly from home to LAS, then LAS to LAX and skip the drive.

- Change your tix, fly from home to ONT, drive to Vegas (it's about an hour closer than LAX with no traffic and you'd skip a lot of potentially traffic-jammed miles). Fly home from LAX since it's closer to most of the stuff you'll want to see when you're back in LA.

- If your tix are not changeable, consider flying from LAX to LAS. Southwest alone offers a dozen flights a day and at the moment a round trip is available for $160ish. By the time you rent a car and pay for gas (it's a 570ish mile round trip), the actual price difference between flying and driving may well be worth not spending 8 to 14 hours in the car.

When you're in LA, a lot of what you'll want to do depends on where you're staying, how much time/money you have, and your age/interests.

SaMo/Malibu areas:
Santa Monica pier
3rd St Promenade
Malibu Creek State Park - nice hike to see nature and the set where MASH was filmed.
Getty Villa (off PCH in Malibu) or Getty Center (above I405 in LA)
Venice Beach boardwalk - freakshow, artists, skaters, muscle beach, etc

There's a paved beach bike path that runs from Pacific Palisades, south through all the beach cities (it winds inland at Venice Beach to get around the marina at Marina del Rey) all the way to the base of Palos Verdes hill. Rent some beach cruisers and watch for dolphins in the waves while you're riding.

LA has a zillion museums, California Science Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Petersen's Auto Museum (if you're a car guy, you'd love Petersen's).

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is awesome. Queen Mary is kinda cool, but I've heard the tours are a little hokey these days.

^^^

+1 on Southwest! I always do that instead of driving and its sometimes cheaper. I rather pay $80 for a plane ticket than spend 6 hours driving through the desert.

The only thing you will see of California on the drive to Vegas is desert, construction, and the land of the dirt people. I would reconsider.
