Computer help: second monitor on Macbook Pro

I have a year old MBP and want to use a second monitor. I have the DisplayPort to VGA adapter, and everything is physically hooked up, but when I go to System-Displays, it doesn't detect a second monitor.

Does anybody have any insight on how to make this work?

Is it the official Mac dongle? Also usually soon as you plug in the dongle, the screen will flash. Did you go to detect displays?

Thanks guys. It ended up being an "unplug it" fix. I screwed around with it for 15 minutes and had tried unplugging everything except the DisplayPort part. Once I did that, it worked fine.

Now I find out my VPN doesn't support dual screens...
