I had kept using Q-tips before even though I knew they weren't the right thing to use... kept using them until my ear was blocked and couldn't hear anything. I tried the OTC stuff for a few days and it didn't help. Went to the doctor and they flushed my ear with warm water and hydrogen peroxide. It didn't bother me at all, and it took all of 2 minutes. Then I could hear better than ever lol... they said the easiest way to clean your ears is in the shower, just turn your ear towards the water and pull on your earlobe until the water gets in your ear then just tilt your head to drain it.

This is because you know how to actually use a Q-tip correctly. You aren't supposed to push them into the ear canal, just make circular motions around the entrance.

I've always washed my ears in the shower and never had an issue. Some people have the nastiest ears

Qtips are major fail. You can get some kits from medical supply stores that work for a buck

BTW wax is there to protect your inner ear, so the goal isn't to remove all of it.

water pic FTW. Had a major blockage as a kid, they used the water pic at the doctor and then a long pair of tweezers, pulled out a chunk of what must have been 1/2" long by 1/4" wide, so gross but felt like such an amazing victory pulling it out...

it was magical, it was pretty much an orgasm before I knew what a real orgasm was

to this day, 20 years later, I can't get the image out of my head, at first I was scared to death thinking "you just pulled that from my ear?" and then I felt a huge relief and thought that was fricking awesome...

Easy on the "shot water in my ear" talk. You need to be more gentle than that.

IMHO, the lady in the vid you posted was being far too rough with the fluids.

It's way too easy to damage the insides of your ears. The structures in there are delicate, crucial for hearing and balance, and don't heal up very well if you injure them.

The goal here is to help the natural process, not powerwash or steam clean the innards of your ear canal. The natural process produces wax inside the ear to protect the ear and provides a conveyor belt to carry dust, debris and waste out of the ear. The movement of the jaw keeps a constant flow of that wax moving toward the outside of your ear, where it dries and flakes off.

If you need less wax inside your ear, what you want to do is rinse out any big chunks, and soften the normal layer so it flows easier. You're not trying to strip all the wax from the inside of your ear as if you're clay-barring your car.

That takes patience, repeated treatments (hence the twice a day for a few days) and GENTLENESS in order to lessen the chance of popping your eardrum or causing some other injury.

The hydrogen peroxide also needs a few minutes to work. Maybe longer than you want to stand in the shower with your head tilted.

Get a towel and pillow. Lay on your side and pour a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear. Pull gently on your earlobe and move your jaw around to allow the fluid to reach all your ear canal. Then let it soak for a few minutes (look at the label or find a reliable source online for exact time). Roll over and let the HP drain out of the first ear while you do the other ear. Then go take a shower and gently rinse your ears with warm water.

You may not get big chunks of wax out of your ears. The idea is that repeating that a few times over the course of a few days will soften the wax and speed up its natural flow out of the ear.

Keep a little bottle of mineral oil or the HP in the shower. If you end up with water in your ear a single drop of mineral oil or HP will break the surface tension of the water so it can drain out.
