lies, damned lies, and statistics.

It is amazing the influence that numbers have on people without any consideration to how the data was gathered, or the reliability of the study/poll/etc as a whole.

I'm not shitting on your premise - just your source. Newsmax has been caught in numerous lies and half-truths. If you're looking for reliable info, you couldnt have chosen a worse source. They're worthless.

Herp derp. CNN's findings do NOT support Newsmax findings:

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...-restrictions/

Quote:
The number of Americans who favor major restrictions or an outright ban has typically hovered just under the 50% mark in recent years; now that number is just over 50%. According to the poll 52% say they favor major restrictions on guns or making all guns illegal. That's a five point rise from a CNN survey conducted in early August, following the mass shooting in July at a movie theater in suburban Denver, Colorado that left 12 dead, and shootings two weeks later at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where six people were killed. The five point rise is within the poll's sampling error.

Forty-three percent say last Friday's elementary school shootings in Connecticut makes them more likely to support gun control laws, a 15 point increase from January 2011 following the Arizona incident. Half of those questioned say the school shootings have not changed their opinions on gun control, down 19 points from January 2011.

True. Your poll, not survey, was done by a bunch of journalists (not statisticians) polling an unbelievably biased pool (Fox- but worse).

I can do this all day bud:

Good thing the US is a constitutional republic and not a democracy, who gives a **** if the majority wants to ban guns or not.

This is why we have a constitution. How would you feel the majority wanted to ban free speech? You'd be glad we aren't a democracy, just like I am atm.

This isn't about banning all guns. It's about restrictions. There are restrictions on free speech too.

And if you want to talk about constitutionalism let's discuss the Patriot Act.

Maybe you haven't seen the huge list of guns that would be outright banned in the bill introduced by fineswine? Or what's happening in New York? These are BANS.

The only point I was trying to make though, is lately the media has this tendancy to do all this meaningless cheerleading - "Majority of Americans support tougher gun laws". We don't have mob rule here, and the constitution was put in place for exactly that reason. Majority decides they support a state sponsored religion? Too bad. Majority decides they want slavery back? Too bad. Majority wants to take my rifles? To ****ing bad.

A ban on new guns is a ban on all guns?

I actually just bought a gun recently. Just as insurance in case the Federal government wants to make it a headache acquiring a legal one later on.

There are already reasonable restrictions on firearm ownership. We don't need anymore. Hell, the best way to reduce gun homicides is to legalize weed and coke. Half of all gun homicides are gang/drug related. About 80% of the illegal drug trade's revenue comes from those two drugs.
