if you want an easy install go with http://www.bavsound.com/
aftermarket is more difficult, but you can get the sound you really want. For the door speakers, you will have to cut the doors to properly mount bigger speakers. the stock ones are mounted to the door panels with very thin magnets (thats why the sound quality isnt great). most aftermarket speakers have much bigger magnets that wont clear the door panels. take a look at this to see what your getting into http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=317339 headunit / amps / subwoofers are just like any other car

installing a pacswi-x will keep your steering wheel controls with an aftermarket headunit.

if you enjoy doing your own work then you can put together your own system that's better than what bsw offers. If that is a hassle than indeed BSW has what you need.
