Is HSPA+ as fast as LTE theoretically? Yes. Sometimes faster. Depending on location my phone will get up to 30 mb/s, but sometimes it'll only get 10, while my friend's SGS2 with HSPA+ goes higher than that. We've tested this.
Is it as fast in day to day use/the way the carriers have implemented the two technologies? No. See above.
Is it nice to have the additional speed of LTE over HSPA+? Yes. Of course it's nice.
Is the additional speed noticeable? Yes. Only when downloading very large files.
Is LTE necessary? No. Precisely.
See bold.

Depends on the phone. Supposedly, the LiquidSmooth is meant to give you better battery life. On my own phone, CM10 is worse at battery than stock, mainly due to being more open and having better, subjectively speaking, multitasking.

Battery life is ok, not that great.

CM (or CM based, like liquid smooth) is the way to go. I messed around with the others but always came back.

Just ordered a 16gig for the gf

She's switching to $30/month T-Mobile monthly 4G.

FYI, 8gig ship times are up to 3-4 weeks again Google based their production numbers off sales of previous Nexus models. Unfortunately, demand outweighed that estimate by about 10x.

Demand For Google's Nexus 4 Phone Is 10X What Google Expected

Are you able to put it on backorder? They are sold out right now and I'm about to push an order through
