Party of 10. Five adults five children. Most have policies where 6+ have gratuity added. I was confused at first because of the total, thinking what a lame dinner....round of waters and salads/appetizers. But to be fair I'm going to assume the bill was split up at the end

When I was younger working as a server, the place I worked at added a grat if there was a party of 8 or more and it wasn't uncommon to get the check split.

I do think it's a sham they are showing you 18% rather than 15% though.

It's messed up. But it is also messed up that restaurants AND waitresses almost always hide these automatic gratuity charges in small disclaimers, and never tell you in-person that you have already paid for a tip. They are always banking on the fact that you will miss it, and double-tip them.

This case seems ok wherein it's clear that they did that on the receipt, but I've been to plenty that hide it in a long list of items or put some TINY little disclaimer on a bottom sheet that you are not signing.

So I can understand how some people will get pissed in those cases. They should tell you to your face if they are charging automatically for your tip.

Also, Yelp does not make it clear that anytime you use a yelp deal, they automatically charge either 18 or 20% gratuity. I've had a waiter literally abandon us after he found out I was using a yelp deal because his tip was already locked in.

for my wedding reception there is a 19% "service fee"

i am going to start charging people a service fee or mandatory tip for my engineering services. why should servers get a tip for bringing you beverages and carrying around food? i design **** so you don't fvcking die, isn't that worth a little tip?!!!
