I never understood the concept of automatically adding a tip to large parties.

If i show up with a group of 8 friends....i'm bringing a large amount of business to the restaurant. How are the 4 couples sitting on the other side of me any different? yet they don't get charged an automatic tip

Isn't it harder to handle 4 separate couples then one group of people?

To ensure the waiter doesn't get burned. A large party usually takes 30% more time to leave, which costs the waiter (and the restaurant) money. Often times, the waiter might only have that one party (if it is large enough) so that table is a make it or break it for them. A little tip for you guys, if you are ever in a major city, drop a hint that you are in the industry (ie waiter, bartender, etc) somewhere along in casual conversation....see how fast that automatic tip disappears from your bill.

I agree and disagree. I find that people serve table because they want easy money and then cry when they have a bad night. Much easier to educate yourself and pursue something with less drugs and degenerate co-workers.

That said, the way servers are paid is built into the institution of eating out. You can argue that you don't have to tip, but if Servers were paid a real wage per hour, the price of food would go up dramatically.

In the end, don't go out and eat if you can't afford to tip. I cut the most out of my personal budget by cooking about 90 percent of the time.

I was once in a party of 10, the sevice was on that level or worse. The food was cold and terrible whe it finally did come out. Most of us didn't even eat it or just barely. I asked to speak to the manger, the whole bill was "waived".

Generally I'm a good tipper but I also don't put up with bullshit.

You have a wage outside of the tip. Tips are built into restaurant workers salaries.

And since your industry doesn't work that way, I don't need to tip you because it's your job.
