President Barack Obama said there is “no doubt” the government needs new revenue from closing tax “loopholes” and limiting deductions, along with enacting spending cuts, to reduce the federal deficit.

There’s “no reason why we can’t have really strong growth in 2013,” the president said in an interview with CBS television yesterday before the network’s Super Bowl broadcast. He cited a recovering housing industry, strong manufacturing and rising car sales.

Revenue could be raised through an overhaul of the tax code, he said, “and we can do it in a gradual way so that it doesn’t have a huge impact.”

“There is no doubt we need additional revenue, coupled with smart spending reductions in order to bring down our deficit,” he said. “I don’t think the issue right now is raising rates.”

He is talking about limiting deductions and closing loopholes. You are as bad as the welfare kinds and queens, always expecting a handout from the government.

The GOP's messaging here is very confused and seems to be more tactically driven and reactionary.

If cutting the deficit/debt through spending is Priority One, then they ought to be pleased as punch for large reductions in defense spending now that we're basically out of two immensely expensive long wars (one ill fought for much of it, the other ill-conceived from the start). Propose that and Proirity One suddenly becomes Priority Seven or Eight in order to further plump up our massive defense expenditures/infrastructure/military-industrial comlex (often argued to save jobs in ____ congressional district, just the sort of economic stimulus/support argument the GOP would otherwise decry as socialism). Or how about farm subsidies? Or a range of energy subsidies? Or any other number of programs near and dear to the hearts of the GOP?

Do recall that income taxes are at a rather low level, historically spreaking.
Obama has shown time and time again that he doesn't care about cutting spending. His only solution to everything is to tax more and spend more. Also, "historically speaking", income taxes are not low. You may think the rates seemed much higher in the past, but no one was actually paying those rates. Also, "historically speaking" the top rate was something like 7% on people making millions.

I work in the industry, in the casino I work we are already in a tip compliance for atleast 90 percent of tips, on slow nights 100+ percent. Its based off of an hourly tip accumulation, ex: 24.00 per hour per 8 hour shift = 192.00 taxed tip wages.

Your tips, like your segment of the service industry is highly regulated I'm assuming?

What about servers who are given tax as tips? My understanding is they typical declare about 25 percent of their cash tips and all of their credit card tips(obviously because they have to).

Obama promises he would cut the deficit in half and that no one making under 200/250 would see any of their taxes raise even a dime.

Deficit is now worse, taxes are increased...and I'm supposed to still believe him?

I cannot fathom one good reason why he would have to change his strategy. You'd think there was an economic collapse that took place before he ever stepped foot in office. The nerve of the President.

A liberal friend of mine placed on Facebook after the election : "Obama Victory. Four more years of improvement!"

I didn't comment but was just thinking to myself : Unemployment, food stamps, GDP, average take home pay, deficit... where is the improvement in any of those?"

Considering the hole we were digging out of, GDP hasn't been awful.

Same thing goes for unemployment. You can't look at the rate in January 2009 and the current rate and say "OMG they are the same!" because it ignores the lagging nature of unemployment figures. Again, considering the hole we were digging out of the UE figures aren't horrific.

Neither are fantastic, but they are improvements compared to when the POTUS started.

I won't bring up the stock market or any other economic metrics because it's a mixed bag.....stock market is doing just fine, housing starts and industrial production are ramping up, but there are other metrics that are down, as well.
