Grammar says a lot about a person.

Of course, if English is not their first language, it matters much less.

I think its important to have proper punctuation and avoid run on sentences otherwise it makes your sentences very hard to read and I read stuff aloud in my head and if there isn't any punctuation it makes you sound like an idiot please help my car won't start and there is mayonnaise under my oil cap will M3 rims fit my 325i?

Many of us, especially in the business world, communicate mostly over email. I don't nitpick grammar. Mine isn't perfect. However, I do notice BAD grammar. If your grammar is so bad that you can't easily get your point across then yes, I will look down on you.

But grammar is so simple in the grand scheme of things. How hard is it to distinguish between their and there? Honestly? And this is just me, but I don't believe smart and intelligent are the same thing. I worked with a guy who has a degree in civil engineering and aced differential equations but couldn't spell his way out of a wet paper bag, let alone form a coherent sentence. No doubt he's smart, and good at what he does, but in reading his emails it felt like most of his brain was allocated to doing one thing and one thing only.

A truly intelligent person will be able to clearly convey their thoughts in the most concise manner possible.

Yes, definitely. I don't understand how some people can be in top UGs, medical schools, or be professors, without knowing the difference between affect/effect, they're/their/there, etc. They are definitely smart in other ways, but I've found that bad grammar/spelling generally means their writing skills are poor.

Depends how bad it is..

I am regularly a presenter and can barely spell my name. I can't spell 2/3 of my vocabulary

I know grammar, I just can't spell.

They're/there/their

Affect/effect

No/know

Too/two/to

The bottom two examples misuse bother me, top two don't so much.

Any homonyms I don't get stressed out over. I misuse them in casual convo all the time but I know the difference.

This fvcking guy...

Truly one of the most intelligent people I've ever met... yet to hear him talk, and I've spent hours in his company over the years, you'd think he's an imbecile.

Yes, grammar counts...
