Senate: Two Black Members a First

http://go.bloomberg.com/political-ca...mbers-a-first/

Quote:
BY GREGORY GIROUX
JAN. 30, 2013 10:57 AM EST

William "Mo" Cowan, the choice of Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick for John Kerry's Senate seat, is joining a chamber that will have two black members for the first time in its history.
Cowan, a Democratic lawyer and Patrick's former chief of staff, will join a Senate that includes Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican who entered the Senate by way of appointment this month as the first black senator from the South since the Reconstruction era more than a century ago.

At the same time, Cowan will serve on an interim basis for about five months and isn't running in a special election planned June 25. Kerry is vacating his Senate seat on Friday to become Secretary of State.
Cowan will become just the eighth black senator in history, adding his name to a short list that includes President Barack Obama, who was an Illinois senator for four years. Obama's successor, Democrat Roland Burris, served for less than two years on an interim basis; one of their predecessors, Democrat Carol Moseley Braun, served from 1993 to 1999 and remains the only black female senator in history.

Edward Brooke, a Massachusetts Republican who held the seat Cowan will assume, served from 1967 to 1979 as the first black senator to enter the chamber by popular vote.

Hiram Revels and Blanche K. Bruce, both Mississippi Republicans, served in the Senate during the Reconstruction era, though never together.
Finally, Now Tim Scott has someone to sit with during lunch time.

Happy black peoples month everyone.

So? Who gives a $hit what the color of their skin is? Oh, I forgot, it's only a big deal to other black people.

This. People need to stop classifying people by race

Technically we are all of the human race. There are no black, white or asian races. They are actually ethnicities.

Why is racism perpetuated? Why is it still such a common issue? Is it because whites are running around telling black people they suck? Or perhaps because there are some blacks are constantly accusing any white that takes issue with them as racists?

If you ask me, it's a combination of the two.. but the problem is far more attributable to those in the latter category. Any time a black is unjustly treated, Jesse Jackson and all his peers come out to stir up hatred and animosity which is passed onto the children in black homes... KKK members (or similar mentalities) are BLATANTLY stigmatized in our society as hateful, spiteful, evil people... any child continuing the views of their lineage does so KNOWING it's socially unacceptable.... how will a black child recognize their parents as "in the wrong" for continuing racism when society won't make similar comments about Jesse Jackson?

Actually, last I checked, which I did because some idiot made some comment about 'bad' races...it turns out there are three races of man by some definitions: Caucasian, Negroid, and Mongolian. Truth is, at this point, I'm pretty sure everyone is a mix of all three, especially those who really want to be purebred!

I'll doublecheck wiki, though...I think some classify us into 5 races.

Who really cares. It's just nice to see representative gov't at work, trying to represent a large % of our country with 2% of the senate. Our founders would be so disappointed in us. We've had enough time, haven't we?

If we're going to review gun control, we have to look at all the relevant statistics. Race and other demographics are certainly relevant when crime is overwhelmingly committed by certain groups (age levels, skin color, income levels, etc).

Skin color is NOT relevant when evaluating if we've selected quality senators...
