What does an amp do? What are the measurements of wattage?

Best buy? Any good websites? Im trying to spend some big bucks on it

Thanks

It should be plenty fierce for whatever your application. If you want surround sound then you could add a mixer and a receiver but honestly this should be plenty loud for whatever your application.

Sledgehammer eh? That's a system for a club/huge party.

I bet it can pretty easily be beaten for SQ.

You really think he'll be able to hear a difference? Or even care? Don't forget, he doesn't even know what an amp is.

I have B&W CM9s in my theater and modded JBL JRX 215s for parties and brand practice / small gigs.

Last summer we had a wedding on our back lawn and borrowed a pair of these from a friend for the outdoor music:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HD1531/

Mackie HD1531
1,800-watt High-definition 3-way Loudspeaker, Active, with 15" Woofer, 3" Voice Coil, 6" Midrange Horn, 1.75" Compression Drive.

$2,500 for a pair, which is relatively cheap for what you get. Those are the first thing that jumps to mind when I hear "fierce". 126 dB! They actually sounded decent at full volume, too. I cranked them up all the way and enjoyed quality music 200 feet away.

Personally, that's not the kind of thing I'd buy for indoor use . . unless I was trying to build a night club or had a band.

This sound system is not for my car. And fierce is a casual adjective....i understand some of you rely on this forum for the entirety of your diction and never heard it before.

Budget is $1,000

Does that include the amp/receiver?

If so, these will be plenty loud, and for $1000 total, you are obviously not looking at audiophile level audio, so these will do you plenty at home.

For less than $1000 you're going to have to skimp on a lot. What do you want? 2.1, 5.1, 7.1? Is this for music, movies, both?

2.1 setup

2x Infinity P363
=$340
HK 3490 = $430
Energy ESW-C8 Sub = $220

Total: $990

Like others have said, read up. AVS Forums are a great place to start. And stop using the word fierce.

Not a bad list. For even less you could look at the Andrew Jones Pioneer system (front towers), and a Pioneer or Denon receiver.

He designed the TAD Reference speakers, which are some of the best on the market today.

The HK stereo receivers are very nice. The new multi-channel ones have a cheaper power supply and aren't up to par.

If you are gonna spend that much on speakers .. I would go with Aerial Speakers. These things are incredible. You would need an amp and receiver and nothing else. Perfect.

Come on. Totally impractical and you're blowing his budget through the roof.
