does M52 have an EGR valve?

hi all,

I've only posted on here once before so a warm hello!

I have a 1995 e36 M52 2.0. It's failed the MOT on the co2 level, which hovers around the 0.6 mark (the car was well warmed up for the test).

The engine has covered 167k, (I've had it since 90k), but previous MOT's (last year and year before) have seen the first fast idle test in this region, and the the co2 level has dropped before the 0.3 pass mark to o.12 or even 0.05 on the second, and the car has passed.

To give you an idea of the condition of the engine, in the last few months I've fitted a new cat, lambdas, serviced the injectors, changed the oil/filter/fuel filter/air filter. i changed the oil every 5k, and the compressions are good.

Seems to me a valve or something isn't opening. My mechanic friend put it on a diagnostic machine, which threw up an EGR or AGR code. But the car doesn't seem to have an EGR valve (it's a petrol engine).

If anyone has an idea of what could be causing the high c02 level your insight would be really appreciated. my mechanic seems to think that 0.5 is typical of a car of this age and mileage, but given the previous readings at 60k, and that it seems to be running rich suggests to me something is a miss, like it's running in closed loop mode or something

Secondary Air valve attached to the catalysts. can be tested by removing vacuum line and air injection line. You have to figure our a way to apply a vacuum to the line to the valve and force air into the valve, If it is bad will not flow. If you do not apply vacuum and blow air it should remain blocked. Lastly in order for this valve to receive the vaccum at the time requested by the computer . There is a one way valve and a 12 volt valve behind the intake manifold. near the last cylinder

Will confess to being unfamiliar with Europe's MOT test, and with the '95 Euro version of this engine, but can insert a couple of things:

1) They are not testing for CO2. They are testing for CO, carbon monoxide, which is partially-burned fuel. High CO generally comes from poor mixing (bad injectors or really dirty intake valves or exhaust obstruction) or bad catalysts. Other possible causes of high CO include engine not reaching full operating temperature due to stuck thermostat.

2) The condition of the secondary air system, even a leaking check valve, should not affect CO during a test that is run with the car fully warmed up.

3) I believe that you are correct that your car has no EGR because my '97s don't have EGR. That raises the question of code interpretation if the mechanic said the computer reported an EGR code. If you had an EGR and it was leaking, that would more likely drive up HC readings rather than CO readings.

4) AGR is found only on diesel engines isn't it? What code list is he reading??

Get a proper code interpretation list for your engine.

Make sure that there are no obstructions in the air box and no leaks in the air duct to the throttle body. Make sure the water is at full temperature (measure it, don't rely on the dash guage).

Run some fuel injector and upper end cleaner through it and hope it helps.

Others will scoff, but I always burn premium fuel during emission tests. That, however, is for NOx reasons, not CO. We have loaded dyno NOx tests here in California.
