Agreed.

There is a Country Mart at Crane out past Westgate in Scottland if you want to run out there and try it. I've always gotten good gas at Hassler's Junction.

Just tossing something out, does not happen often and usually quiets or gets slight louder under load.

Auto trans flex plate cracked???

Might change when put into gear and the neutral or brake torquing engine.

Recording would be helpful.

Ok, I come bearing video. The audio didn't come out as clearly as I would have liked, so I'll try to provide better videos later today.

Engine at idle: the tapping is softly audible around 0:15-0:20

Tapping while driving: the tapping is audible when driving past the garage doors (0:05-0:09 and 0:12-0:14) . A curb or wall is needed to bounce the sound back.

Definitely sounds like some kind of valve noise to me. And it doesn't seem that bad at all, at least in video. Be glad you don't drive an e30, the m20 sounds like a sewing machine.

"Sewing machine" is a great way to describe the sound. Here's another video where it can be heard more clearly.

Sounds to me like wrist pin slap. But you've already ruled that out so I have no idea.

After hearing it, and wading through a few hundred posts about tapping noise, the only thing that hasn't been mentioned here that you might check are the injectors. The fact that it goes away when you let of the gas (injectors stop?) might point in that direction. Keep us posted. We love puzzles.

Hey, I have a ticking rattle noise from my e46 316ti, not sure if same but it sounds like you have pretty much replaced most of the engine!! I've had timing chain, guides and tensioners replaced and timing reset. As advised by BMW stealers. Still same noise!! Starts fine first time all the time noise only after started 2mins and more evident at 18000-2000 revs, drives fine no apparent loss of power. Ive located the noise to the area where stepper motor/VVt Motor
Having listened to the noise in this video heard on you tube:
I am beginning to think its noise resonating from Vacum pump, see comments below video.
Real oem part: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...78&hg=11&fg=15 Part is No:2 here
Let me know if you ever did find out what was causing the noise as I need help too!!
Thanks

^ check the flex plate.
Also, have you checked for any exhaust leaks, especially around the manifold. Possible warped flange? Cracked manifold?

The flex plate is something none of us had thought of, and I plan to bring it in for diagnostic early this coming week. I'll definitely post a follow-up... thanks for the recommendation!

My mechanic got under the car to take a look at the flex plate (is there an inspection port or something for that?) and said it looked fine. I'm now also losing about a quart of oil every two weeks (it isn't dripping), which happened pretty suddenly. At this point I'm about ready to say screw it, swap in a warrantied longblock, and hope for the best. Is Bavarian Auto Recycling the right way to go, or do you guys have a better recommendation? Is it worth shelling out extra for an upgraded warranty?

In other news, the car is also now making an irregular ticking (separate from the tap discussed in the rest of the thread) under hard acceleration, such as when accelerating onto a highway. It happens around 3-4k RPM (tick, TICK TICK, tickticktick) and goes away as soon as the automatic transmission changes gears, so I can't tell if it's a load-related issue (one of the joints going bad?) or the start of a transmission issue.

Here's a video... it's hard to hear, but starts at about 0:03

Thanks for the solid advice so far, guys!

I would try a slightly thicker oil and overfill it slightly before junking the motor.
