Oil Capacity for 2004 BMW 330xi

Can someone confirm what the oil capacity is for a 2004 BMW 330xi? I've seen earlier threads that showed a range from 6.9 up to 8 quarts. Some of these threads indicated that the range was due to a change in the oil pan design over the years for the 330xi. I am just trying to get a definitive answer. Thanks guys!

Not to be insulting... But what does your owner's manual state?

Mine held 8 quarts dead on on the dipstick, till I had to replace the oil pan due to a loose tire in the dark on the freeway, Now it holds 7.

thanks Rick.....my owner's manual says 6.6 quarts but I've seen numerous postings that the information on this in the manual is possibly erroneous. That's the reason for my original question on this subject.

Bill... Like I said... Don't mean to be insulting but I would surely trust the owner's manual that came with my car rather than the Internet... You'll never have 10 people all tell you the same amount... Someone will always be odd man out.

Mine shows 7.9 Quarts US... I only need to add a little over 7 Qts when I change mine though...

I always do 1 quart at a time with plenty of time between the first time I change the oil, so I know what its holding Every engine tends to have a bit of difference, oil pans are not really a item that the manufacturers needs to have to the .0001 inch.. Pluss I'm amased at how many mistakes are made translating between languages in car owners manuals.

just another thought...

thanks again Big Rick.......that's my point....your manual says 7.9 quarts but you only needed 7 qts. My manual says 6,6 qts.....others have quoted anywhere from 6.5 to 8 qts. Just really confusing anf inconsistent. I'll go by the dipstick and see what my 2004 330xi really takes....probably around 7 qts. By the way, what year model is your car?

Bill... Mine is a 2002... The dipstick is the only method I would use. You will only overfill a car once and you learn that. LOL I'd rather run it a little low than even a drop high.

Bentley says 7.5. Manual says 6.6. Bentley is right for my car.

I highly disagree. Run a quart high in your xi. Up to 8.5-9 quarts is completely fine.

The top mark on the dipstick is too low for any kind of motorsport or hard driving.

The dealer dumps in 8 quarts when they do an oil change in an xi and will always show above the top mark.

What is all this non-sense? Let's agree that the XI capacity is a variable and the manual(s) are clearly questionable.

So, you buy 8 qts. When filling, add 7 and check the level. Aim for the area 1/2 way between the marks. Continue to slowly add love juice waiting a few seconds between fill and stick checks. When it reaches desired level, start the car and idle for a minute. Wait 10 minutes and re-check. You will have a half to a full qt. spare oil to proudly display on your garage shelf.

Now, note your results for the next oil change and you have your answer.

I'm not revealing my capacity 'cause it doesn't matter friends >> your results may vary!
