Canadian drivers need Int. DL in Florida!
I never thought this would go as far as this. US is seriously in its own little world (to be fair its only one state)... but still, this is sad
![]() Canadians driving in state of Florida require an international drivers license now. Its ok that US citizens racked up over $2 million in speeding tickets in Ontario that haven't been paid last year, while Canadians are forced to pay on the spot when pulled over (even when the cop can't prove anything). Ten years ago we didn't need passports to get through the border... today we need to fork out extra $$ to get to Disney World. Why is it that the world is opening up while the US is closing itself in? just a rant... going to DW next month.. ![]() Sent from my SGH-I727R using Bimmer App |

The OP took this out of context, it isn't JUST Canadians, it is all foreigners. The issue being solved is that Florida is an international destination; thus people from all over the planet descend on Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, etc, rent cars and in many cases brake laws, cause accidents, etc. These drivers would then pull out a license that understandably is in their native language. Sorry - but our police are not versed in Arabic, French, Farsi, Mandarin Chinese, etc. So an IDP (International Driving Permit) which is something accepted in over 150 civilized countries is now being required in several US states, including Florida as of 1/1/2013. Canadian press jumped on it as if it is some 'Anti-Canadian' push which simply isn't true - we hate all foreigners equally, not just Canadians

Or the inverse.....use to go the Canadian Grand Prix every year. Spent quite a bit each year in tourism dollars up there. On my way home with my gf, we were in the right lane with cruise control on....mostly empty highway....Candian plate cars were passing me occasionally. I got pulled over and they confiscated my radar detector on the spot. I was unaware radar detectors were illegal (I know I know...ignorance is no excuse) then she wrote me a $550 fine.
The entire time, we were polite, courtious, explained we were up for the GP enjoying what Quebec has to offer. This cop even admitted we were not speeding at all. But the cop continued to cite me for the max fine for radar detector possession. (which is legal in my home state of Pennsylvania) And yes...I did pay it. Probably was a foolish move...but I kept a clear concious that way. Have not been back to Quebec since and will never go back. Cops are clearly able to use subjectivity in their job to ascertain real criminals from those that have no ill intentions.

are you that dense? have you ever been to Europe?? or are you one of those who doesn't believe there's a world outside of US? no need for int drivers permit in Europe even if its the most popular destination for summer gateway in the world with MORE THEN ONE language... As for the fanatic getting slapped for a radar, sorry to hear that. Id be pissed just as much. No radars are allowed in Canada and most of the cops will detect one on you. I've seen one cop tear up a car looking for it. But at least he had the proof the law was being broken, and not making shift up just because he can. You should have gotten a warning at most though. ^ i understand that concept.. but since January 1st, state of Florida decided on a requirement to obtain an international drivers permit that needs to be bought ahead of time before driving into the state even for a visit.

That's only one state of fifty. Plus from what I read it's only $15 for the permit and good for an entire year. Someone call the whambulance.

The USA is going down hill fast. No one will want to visit a 3rd world country soon enough so this will all be irrelevant soon.
