It's an absolutely absurd law, given how many millions of Canadians frequently visit/vacation in FL every year. The retards in FL government should have at least exempted English licenses seeing as that's what they were aiming to address: "Millions of international visitors drive in Florida each year, and state legislators thought the international driving permit - a standardized document that translates the licence details into 10 different languages - would help law officers interpret foreign licences." So, unless FL LEOs are so inherently stupid and illiterate, English licenses should have been exempted.

The consequences for what would be deemed "driving without a valid license" are also overboard.

It's actually $25 plus the cost of passport photos (usually ~$20 even at the local Walmart). Someone needs to help you get your facts straight.

You can get the photo done for free here or cough up $8.00 to get one done at a place like CVS. Drops down to $6.00 with their $2.00 coupon they offer on their site. Seems like someone needs to help you get your facts straight

"The Florida Highway Patrol will not be enforcing the state law requiring Canadian drivers to carry an international driving permit along with their drivers licence." Seems like they have some sense.

I was pointing out your ignorance RE: costs of administrating the license and then making an ignorant remark. And also, Canada does not have CVS - I reiterate: get your facts straight.

Its ok that US citizens racked up over $2 million in speeding tickets in Ontario that haven't been paid last year, while Canadians are forced to pay on the spot when pulled over (even when the cop can't prove anything).

Ten years ago we didn't need passports to get through the border... today we need to fork out extra $$ to get to Disney World.

Why is it that the world is opening up while the US is closing itself in?

just a rant... going to DW next month..

That does not sound right, because a police officer does not have the right to be judge and jury.

That was done 50 years ago, but I was not aware it is being done now.

How can they do it to someone from Canada but not New York or Nebraska ?

Funny, they recently announced Canada Appreciation Month in Dallas because Canadians spend so much money there.

http://www.visitdallas.com/includes/events/event/20579/

There are entire neighborhoods in Phoenix owned by almost all Canadians, the bottom of their housing market was basically supported by Canadians buying property.

Isn't tourism one of the top industries in Florida? Americans are silly, make it a pain in the ass for some of your top economic providers...then give the lowest of the low all a big raise!

Does this mean I dont have to go to CAA and get mine done?
It says they're going to 'delay enforcement' of this law to Canadian Drivers but they don't state an effective date or anything...

It says only FHP would delay enforcement. No word on other local police forces. Play it safe and get the stupid piece of paper if you're driving down.

Sorry - but our police are not versed in Arabic, French, Farsi, Mandarin Chinese, etc. So an IDP (International Driving Permit) which is something accepted in over 150 civilized countries is now being required in several US states, including Florida as of 1/1/2013. Canadian press jumped on it as if it is some 'Anti-Canadian' push which simply isn't true - we hate all foreigners equally, not just Canadians

Everyone calm down. The IDP for Canadians or for any driver's license in English seems to be going away.

As an aside, i didn't see it as a big deal, maybe misinformed, but not a big deal. I travel all over the place, and I can tell you that in reverse, in countries where english is not the first language, having an IDP is a good thing.

What is interesting though is that my provincial driver's license is also cleared as my passport when entering through a land border. It is a special license that costs a little bit more, but very useful. So the US accepts it as both my driver's license and passport at border crossing, but Florida, if they hadn't reconsidered their approach would not? Interesting...
