Unleaded or premium

Am I being uptight or should I only use premium in my E46? Is regular fine? I have been religious about using premium, but with the rise in gas prices...

Just for the sake of argument...I filled up the car with regular (87 octane), gave it to Wifey, and sent her to Portland on a shopping spree.
She came home with 418 miles on the car....averaged 34.6 miles per gallon.
I normally run premium, but I'm switching it up now and again, based on my own results. Yours may vary

I hate when people complain about having to put premium in. Its $3 more a tank in gas. Its suppose to give you better MPGs and burn cleaner in your engine. Think of all the things you dont need that you regularly buy and how much that costs.

It's a tough crowd to be sure...Gotta have thick skin if you want to keep your sanity
But there are some misconceptions;
First...premium burns no more dirty or clean than any other octane rating.
Premium and regular both create the same amount of energy when burned. Premium just burns slower allowing for higher compression and more advanced timing, which in turn allows for more horsies from your car.
The simple answer is that if the manufacturer says use premium, then that's what you should use. Will your motor blow with regular? NO

That's a misconception

Gasoline pumps typically post octane numbers as an average of two different values. Often you may see the octane rating quoted as (R+M)/2. One value is the research octane number (RON), which is determined with a test engine running at a low speed of 600 rpm. The other value is the motor octane number (MON), which is determined with a test engine running at a higher speed of 900 rpm. If, for example, a gasoline has an RON of 98 and a MON of 90, then the posted octane number would be the average of the two values or 94.

High octane gasoline does not outperform regular octane gasoline in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning the engine. Consumers should select the lowest octane grade at which the car's engine runs without knocking. Occasional light knocking or pinging won't harm the engine, and doesn't indicate a need for higher octane. On the other hand, a heavy or persistent knock may result in engine damage.

I ran unleaded 87 octane in my 323ci for years with no issues and averaged 30 mps the whole time, however I do use 93 octane in my M3.

Definitely should use UNLEADED! All BMWs use Unleaded. I am not even sure anyone sells Leaded fuel anymore.

A few gas stations have 100 near me. It is still unleaded. When you get into higher octanes like 110 and up it can be found at race tracks.

The engine was designed for 91 octane. Just use what was recommended by the manufacturer. Penny pinchers need not apply but consider it the BMW "tax." I think we have all been down this road at one point or another to either have not filled up with premium or have thought about it. You have to pay to play, right?
