330xi if you want an E46. 335xi or x-drive on the E90/92.

Im used to working on late american models and engine swaps are fairly easy, how is it for bmws? Is it the same or would i have to deal with mostly computer and wiring and sensors? And is it even posible to put an m3 engine, transmition and rear axle in a wagon?

Yes it's possible to drop an M3 engine and all the other bits into a RWD wagon, I wouldn't try it with an Xi wagon though.

The swap from a 2.5L M54 to a 3.0L M54 is a piece of cake as all the sensors and stuff are the same. Only different one is the MAF. Swapping the S54 from the M3 in is a lot more work since mostly everything is different.

Good part is that you can get M3 power out of a supercharged M54 3.0L and that can go into either a RWD or an Xi.

The biggest question I have for you is why in the world do you need/want an Xi in San Diego?
