Do it! Sounds like a great idea! You should get a credit card to buy all of the parts with.

That is sarcasm. Buy a new car.

I'm assuming the understand the complexity and challenges of FI. Also assuming you are correctly saving for retirement and have a decent emergency fund.

SOOO I say do it! You are replacing the motor anyways, blow this one to h*&&!

We need to vote the 323 off the island. Its like the e46s ugly stepchild, and it seems everyone who owns one for some reason confuses it with a honda civic.

Go with nitrous for a motor killing power adder. Bungee cord the bottle in the passenger seat, run the hose through the grommet in the drug bin and wire a simple momentary push button on a coil cord. It worked well for me!Click image for larger version

The 323i was one of the first E46's. It wasn't perfect but none the less a great car. I can't stand all of the 323 haters. It's not a bad car at all. 170 horsepower isn't a ton, but it still has the same feel and handling as any 325. I agree with you that most 323i's are "riced" out and look like ****, but I have an all stock 323 and I adore it.

Do it if you don't mind also destroying your transmission.

323s are still nice. That's what I had before my current car, and it was a great first car.

But when you upgrade to something with power, you hardly ever look back. The only thing I miss about it are the CSL wheels and angel eyes it had...and the CSL bumper...I should have saved these things.

@OP: do it. I looked into it for so long, did vast amounts of research on it, it's very possible, just know that nobody on here will support you because they think you're spending their money.

Not much unless you FI the car. Like I said, you'll destroy the transmission. If you're getting a new engine anyway I don't see why not. Just don't expect your tranny to last. If it does, good, but I wouldn't plan on it.

youre going to turn it into a 3k pound paper weight with a ebay turbo which include ZERO tuning of the ecu. And with after market mangement system youre looking at 3-4 k (without tuning) to tune a 700$ ebay turbo.

get real.

I dont know what you mean by headers.... but if you are talking about a custom hot side then

I do have a feeling that is not the case however. If you are even considering boost you should buy a spare long block anyway.
