macbook charger
My boss's macbook charger won't charge anymore, and she doesn't want to pay the $75 for a new one. So I took a look at it, and saw some wire sticking out of the insulation. I stripped the insulation off around the area and looked at the wire, and it's all just 1 coil, no separate wire insulated in the middle. So, can I just twist this up really tight and wrap some electrical tape on it to fix it?

ask her if $75 is worth a fire in her home/office
what if you 'fix it' and it starts a fire in her home. who fixed it?

You're probably right Sim. I have no idea if they really are $75, that's what she told me when she was looking for a replacement.

The ones on Amazon and eBay are mostly counterfeit. No, it is not one wire. You are going to fry her computer or worse, start a fire.
Look on youtube for Magsafe repair. There are plenty of guides. 9/10 times Apple will give you a new charger if you go in with the busted one. It has to be less than a year old, but they don't really have any way to keep track (unless it is the very old style).

make sure you know if it requires a magsafe1 plug tip or magsafe2 plugtip. The newer retina display mac pros require magsafe2 tips

Ok after looking at the youtube vid I went back and pulled apart the outer layer of wire some more and found the inner wire. That one's insulation is still completely intact. I can't do the fix on the youtube vids tho because that would leave her with a 1.5 foot long cord lol. I guess I'll have her try to get a free replacement.

You've got a shot. But that stripped wire is going to be very hard to explain.

Lol how so? Just say I tried to fix it myself but was unable to. The insulation is cleanly cut off, it doesn't look worn or torn.

seriously if the inner conductors jacketing is still intact just solder the braid back together and cover it with either electrical tape or shrink tubing..

Go to the Genius Bar. Make sure you make an appointment before you go. I had that happen to me. I think I read something about how you wrap up the charger and the manufacture poor insulation on the charger. Mine caught a fire once. Luckily it didn't burn down my home http://blogs.courant.com/connecticut...ptop-char.html |

I had mine replaced for free a while back. I'd try the apple store first.
