What's your bonus percentage ???

Coworker and I have been chatting about corporate compensation at the middle-man level.

Currently in my mid-30s, supply chain professional, non-management. Employed by a top tier company listed on the NYSE. We only have a 2% bonus payout. Which I find rediculously low for the level of how directly our roles affect the total company performance. Whereas the next level up, our managers, have a 20% bonus payout.

It feels like a very disjointed bonus program.

With a former company, my role was at the 10% bonus level and the managment roles above me were at 20%. Which personally feels much more equitable and more motivating.

How motivated would you really be for only 2%?

Could be worse..my raise this year was kind of sh!t due to company cutbacks, despite the fact that we're one of the most profitable sectors of BAE, already exceeding 2013 sales goals making them the big bucks. Share the pain mentality I suppose.

I'm interviewing with a company tomorrow for a small pay bump but a better bonus.

Bonus' in cost centers like Engineering is a hard sell. I get a 6% bonus annually as it is now, I'm interviewing for a 10% bonus tomorrow but they aren't a carrier and my role isn't so much "keep the lights on" type of work as it is more specific to the variety of accounts and projects.

Sales guys get the biggest bonus' because they are out developing biz. People in operations type jobs never see that level.

Varies based on performance (obviously) but here is what I've received in recent years:
-Bonus: 8.5-14%
-Raise: 4-20% (on the high side if promoted)
-Profit sharing: 2-4%

I only got a 4.6% bonus this year, our company likes to give out big raises and bonuses one year, then half it the next and then go big again. This is an off year.

I've been on the receiving end and paying end of bonuses over my career(s). Bonuses can be both motivating and demotivating; its all about delivery. Companies that fvck this up are those that let department heads marginalize bonuses by paying everyone the same token amount because the department/division/etc did well. This approach blows because the overachievers get the shaft and do-nothings that skate by will continue to get rewarded for doing the bare minimum. I also hated when my company would just say "everyone gets $2K". Yeah, that's great for the single guy making $50K who sees it as a 4% bonus - but for the married guy making $150K its a 1.33% bonus (wow, that buys a whole extra pizza every week after taxes). Again - a terrible lazy way to approach it that marginalizes the intent and demotivates high performers.

Good companies reward and openly celebrate the hard workers. President's Club, Cruise Club, etc are great programs (mostly sales related). The best program has no cap and the employee is shown how to get to 15, 20 even 50% bonus based on performance. Why would you ever put a program that caps out their potential? I WANT to have a reason to pay someone a 50% bonus. Tell a guy he maxes out at 10% and he will sandbag and hold deals back until next year when the program restarts.
