Gas prices going up! Who's got the best MPG??
I have a 01 325xi that runs pretty good. Pretty much stock. I put premium and get 28-30mpg hi way. Any frontrunners out there ? What are your mods?

My bone stock (engine wise) 2004 330xi 6-speed averages almost 26mpg. I drive 70 miles a day going down a mountain pass in the morning and up in the evening. On flat, open road I get closer to 30mpg. I try to drive my 1997 Miata 1.8 5-speed as much as I can for work though 'cause I only have about 44,000 miles on my 330 and don't wanna rack up a buncha miles but it's been a little snowy lately and the Miata is basically worthless in the snow. Oddly, the Miata only averages about 30mpg.

2004 330xi with 6 speed. I get 23ish city/traffic and 30ish highway in the winter on winter gas and snow tires. I get 26ish city/traffic and up to 34-35ish highway on winter gas and summer (all season) tires.

I've found MPG threads are usually quite misleading as there is always someone saying the get 5-6 mpg better than typical and there never seems to be a rhyme or reason for it. Not bashing on anyone here but it's usually because people either go by what their car tells them, their circumstances and driving habits are far less typical than they think and say or they use different methods for determining mpg numbers than the typical reset the trip meter every tank and divide the mileage driven by the gallons it takes to fill method. 21-22 city and 26-28 highway are right around the published mpg numbers from BMW and other sources even when the car was new. Not saying there isn't an issue but your about normal for that car. Mine's an 02 automatic with 126k on it; prolly due for pre-car 02 sensors but I don't see that raising mpg by much more than 2 mpg tops. Last edited by miweber929; 02-22-2013 at 06:54 AM. |

I have a failing CCV among other issues, must do air filter/fuel filter one day. Then 02 sensors/spark plugs. I run a 3.46 diff on 5 speed as well.
Weight really kills on these Xi's! |

I can get 33-35/hwy all day no problem. My average is only about 17 on the computer though because 90% of my driving is downtown and my intake sounds too good echoing off of buildings to not get above 3 grand sometimes. I also have an electric fan instead of the mechanical, I picked up 1-3 with that on the highway.

The manual says put in 91 grade but I live in boston and that seems to not exist. I think I'm due for a new fuel filter as there seems to be some rough idling on some of these cold mornings. Hoping that might give me some extra mpg.

After five months, my trip computer reads 19.5 mpg. (93 octane)
Mostly city driving, with once every other week 100 mile highway tips. In the city, I use the go-pedal in a way that is less than economical. I noticed a drop from 20 mpg to 19.5 mpg almost immediately after changing the oil to M1 0-40. Not sure what oil was in the car before, but it must have been thinner. |

53 mpg is mighty ambitious for these babies. Wait! The XD is a diesel that's totally cheating.
Never mind, you're out. But welcome to our Forum anyway!

I've been driving my xi a little less lately. Average about 19.5 mpg with daily stints in stop and go traffic (226,000 miles auto). Kinda sad to me that the E39 M5 I just picked up gets better mileage (average about 25 mpg so far)
