Service Engine Soon light - don't panic

In short, this little light of mine has been shining lately. And, after $1,600 in (mostly planned) service/maintenance, the light stayed out for a few weeks and then shown itself again. $300 later and she kept on shining. Not being a neglectful owner, service center suggested replacement of a valve which controls air flow from pump to exhaust. Well, after $2k in repairs, cash was tight and I told them to clear the codes and reset. Picked up car and sure enough, after a few days, this little light shined on again. However, at this point, I invested in MY education vs the car. Especially as the car was running perfectly fine. So reading I went regarding the valve and options for equipping myself with an ODBII solution so I could pull codes myself and reset. Along the path of education, I learned that this system will automatically reset if the fault doesn't repeat in x number (30?) subsequent starts. Well, sure enough, this little light of mine doesn't shine today.

Now, I cannot stress enough, the car was functioning normal during the entire time. Therefore, I felt OK in just letting it go for a bit. Had the car been running rough, I wouldn't just let it go; obvious, right?

So, the lesson learned is to not freak out and immediately run to your mechanic, even if that individual is YOURSELF :-)

So how did you finally get it to stay off?
What did the codes say?
