My Ride: 2002 325i
Calichase's Official Sedan "Track Car" Build Thread

I purchased the car way back February 4th 2012 from a forum member, FWD BLOWS.

2002 e46 325i 5mt 141k miles
Titanium silver with black interior

As of 10/1/13 has 161k miles

I stumbled onto some pictures of the car prior to my purchase.

The car had been in numerous modification states prior to my acquisition, but simply had the following upon purchase
-bbs rs2's
-vmaxx coilovers
-autopower roll bar
-corbeau racing seats(hideous)
-sparco harnesses
-vorsteiner cf gtr hood
-m-tech 2 front bumper
-Depo projector headlights with crappy angel eyes
-Depo clear tail lights
-Depo clear corners
-rogue dms exhaust
-black semi-gloss vinyl roof
-5mm spacer rear and 12mm front
-rear fenders were rolled and trimmed
-front fenders were rolled and trimmed and still rubbed slightly

This car was low, and I had no experience with a car this low. Lets just say I had a couple incidents with parking barriers.

I loved the car but knew it would be a project to get her to my standards.

Edit-
Note- this is a long read, but tells a story of the car.

i have been a BMW enthusiast for quite a while and this has been my dream project. I wanted to blend functionality and form together, to make a car that could perform well on the track but not look out of place on the street. As i became more and more interested in composites, my car became more of my rolling Portfolio. The front bumper was originally a very damaged Vorsteiner full carbon fiber bumper that I repaired without a mold, adding a second symmetric intake hole in the process. I love the aggression that the car displays, and the uniqueness that it embodies.

Make-BMW
Model-325i with the 2.5L inline 6.
Year-2002 (e46 chassis)
Mileage- Currently has 167,xxx miles but recently had a full inspection two and runs phenomenally.
Color-titanium silver metallic with black leather interior/headliner with grey accents
5 speed Manual- sport package
Fixed rear seat- most rigid chassis available for e46 generation
I am the fourth owner.
Zero accidents for the car. Clean title.

Exterior-
-Vorstiener full carbon fiber v-gtr hood, worth $4000 new, has since been discontinued. Vents left unpainted cf.
-Vorsteiner carbon fiber v-csl bumper with custom dual intake hole. Upper edge and splitters left exposed cf (3k value, not including custom work)
-Csl full carbon fiber trunk from mod bargains. Lip and license plate recess left exposed cf. (1k including paint and clear coat that will never fade)
-20th anniversary bbs rs2 18x8.5,18x10 rims with 225/35 and 255/30 hankook ventus v12 tires, the rear fenders were rolled/ pulled to fit 255s, fronts were rolled. Flush stance that looks great.
-H&R trak+ 15mm wheel spacer with extended bolts in front.
-H&R trak+ 3mm wheel spacer with extended lugs rear
-depo projectors 46 with 6000k ddm hids(also have 8000k bulbs with ballast)
-Depo rcr clear tail lights
-Depo clear side markers
-Khoalty smoked front corner lights
-khoalty angel eyes
-custom vorestiener decal
-semi-gloss 3m vinyl wrapped roof
-20% carbon-ceramic tint(will never fade or discolor)
-matte black kidney grills
-3m di-noc carbon fiber wrapped side rub strips
-m5 replica heated mirrors.
-v maxx variant one coilovers
-Meyle front control arms with heavy duty bushings

Interior-
-4 point autopower bolted/welded-in roll bar
-new corbeau fx1 pro seats(not for wide people)
-sparco 4 point harnesses
-zhp performance package tri stitch steering wheel Alcantera
-short euro tray
-m3 shift boot
-m3 e-brake boot
-oem zhp gauge rings
-active Autowerks shift knob
-black headliner with grey elements(2 time theme)
-3m di-noc carbon fiber wrapped interior trim. Looks fantastic

Performance-
-"ebay" replica supersprint headers
-de-resonated section 2
-rogue dms exhaust. This car is loud and mean under wide open throttle, but calm at idle. Little drone at highway speeds if kept under 2k rpm. None when over 2k rpm
-Active autoworks chip/tune with top speed limiter eliminated and rev limiter raised to 7k
-Active autoworks short shift kit

And much more that I'm sure I'm forgetting

Maintenance-
-Oil changed ever 5-7k miles with BMW approved Castrol synthetic 5w-30. Changed on 5/17/14 at 167,xxx.
-Water pump replaced August 2012
-fuel pump and filter just replaced on 4/24/2014. A common e46 failure taken care of!
-valve cover gaskets replaced by previous owner
-cam shaft exhaust positioning sensor replaced
5/17/14
-alternator replaced by previous owner
-clutch replaced by previous owner at 115k miles. Shifts perfectly.
-tires replaced with brand new hankooks in September. Alignment was done professional by at speed motorsports. I have put 7k miles on the car since then and there is virtually no tread wear.
-Front tie rods replaced as of September 2013
-brake pads and rotors replaced 4k miles ago
-thermostat replaced 5/17/14.
-The cooling system has been replaced with high quality aftermarket parts at 120k.
-The vanos has been check out during the last inspection 2, at 150k, and was perfect
-rear subframe was check and deemed safe then as well.

I have all receipts of work and modifications I have done since February of 2012. They can be provided upon request.

The bad-
-no carpet in rear.
- rollbar goes through rear seat and upholstery could be cleaned up.
-headliner could use minor work.
-paint fade spot on front drivers side corner panel where it meets the bumper. Very minor. Covered with Bmw titianium silver touch up paint
-a few minor rock chips on front bumper and hood
-rear driver side wheel has major curb rash on the lip. Others wheels have very minor curb rash
-small dent on rear passenger side quarter panel. This can easily be popped out with paintless dent removal.
-drivers side mirror was hit in a parking lot. I bonded it back on but it no longer rotates like it originally did.
-outside temperature sensor is temperamental.
-car burns roughly 1quart of oil every 3500 miles. Not too rare with e46s with this mileage.

The exterior is nearly perfect to what I Wanted but the interior could use a little work.
Edit 5/17/14
I have done a substantial amount of work on the car in the last few weeks. Replacing the fuel pump, exhaust camshaft sensor, thermometer, changing the oil, and re-tuning the computer. Car runs phenomenally with no mechanical issues to be worried about.

There is a reason why this car car has made it to 167k, and that is because it was properly maintained. If taken care of, it will run forever.

Car fax and vin can be provided upon request

This is an amuteur drivers dream. Perfect for anyone looking to getting into racing with a street legal car that will perform well and won't break the bank. This car is a true head turner!

Finish the project off for me and take this opportunity of a lifetime. The car is 85% of what I want it to be, but my interest has moved elsewhere. A full m3 swap should cost more then 8k for quality oem parts. And the best part is that you will be faster than a stock e46 m3 around the track while looking better.

I spent 2 years improving on the car and finally have gotten to the point where I am slightly apprehensive to actually track it. I invested so much time and money into it that I don't want to destroy it by making one small mistake on the track. Therefore it is time to part ways as I move on to another BMW that may be used on the track.

I wanted this car to drive well on the track, promoting functionality first, although I didn't want to compromise any aesthetic design.

Modifications- all done with meticulous care

Maintenance-
-Oil changed ever 5-7k miles with BMW approved Castrol synthetic 5w-30. Changed on 4/19/14 at 167,xxx.

I have all receipts of work and modifications I have done since February of 2012. They can be provided upon request.

The bad-
-no carpet in rear. Occupants can get in the rear but I wouldn't recommend this car for anyone who needs to carry more then 2 people. It can be done if they climb under the roll bar. Always fun entertainment!
-previous owner installed cage through rear seat
-paint fade spot on front drivers side corner panel where it meets the bumper. Very minor
-a few minor rock chips on front bumper and hood
-clear coat on vents is starting to crack. With a good sand and re-coat it will shine again
-front bumper was originally for an e46 m3. Therefore I had to alter it to fit. It is 100% unique and you will never find something similar. Although, since I had to modify it to fit on the car, it will no longer work on any other car except this one
-rear driver side wheel has major curb rash on the lip from when I was cut off and forced up onto a round-about. Other wheel have very minor curb rash
-small dent on rear passenger side quarter panel. This can easily be popped out with paintless dent removal.
-drivers side mirror was hit in a parking lot. I bonded it back on but it no longer rotates like it originally did.
-trunk has tiny nick on passenger side edge. Just noticed it, maybe 1/4 of an inch
-outside temperature sensor is temperamental.
-car runs rich and burns roughly 1quart of oil every 2000 miles. Not too rare with e46s with this mileage.
-cam exhaust sensor is malfunctioning causing the car to run rich. Will be fixed 4/28/14
-engine thermostat is stuck open and therefore Ecu sense a continuous loop until heating. Bypassing second o2 sensor readings. This means the car will run rich until it comes up to temperature, which takes longer then it should. This will also be replaced 4/28/14

I have babied this car and performed preventive maintenance at all costs. The cooling system has been replaced with high quality aftermarket parts at 120k to ensure it doesn't fail again, a commons e46 problem. The vanos has been check out during the last inspection 2, at 150k, and was perfect, and rear subframe was check and deemed alright then as well.

I am extremely specific with what I'm stating. I have analyzed everything about the car to come up with what is wrong and these are the only thing I could fine. Don't let these negatives change your decision. This car is extremely fun, quick, and will be sure to put a smile on your face.

This car is not for the faint of heart. It is loud, raw and aggressive under wide open throttle, but relatively calm and smooth at idle and even highway driving. The drone is not bad at all for low rpm driving and the seats are comfortable enough to drive all day!

This is an amuteur drivers dream. Perfect for anyone looking to getting into racing with a street legal car that will perform well and won't break the bank. This car weighs close to 3000 lbs, if not under, and puts down atleast 210rwhp and 195 ft/lbs of torque if not more(Never dynoed). This car is a true head turner! looking to sell or trade. I originally wanted to swap in a s54 and do a full swap with an m3 rear end swap and 6mt swap with a 3.91 LSD differential but it's up to someone else to finish it off.
Truly one of the only naturally aspirated non-m's that will hang with zhps and even e46 m3s in the turns.

Finish the project off for me and take this opportunity of a lifetime. A full m3 swap should cost more then 8k for quality oem parts. And the best part is that you will be faster than a stock e46 m3 around the track while looking better.

I had many ideas for the car, and was young and dumb and decided to try them all. Looking back on it, I regret some of the things I've done. But I have learned immensely from my mistakes.

First thing I did was raise it some in the front. Only about 3/4 of an inch. I had learned from e46f to redo the cooling system and make sure the car was in a reliable state first. So like most Bmw purchase, I spent about $1200 to make sure the car wasn't going to give out on me.
I replaced control arms, trailing arms, all the bushings, transmission and motors mount bushings. Brakes and rotors, diff fluid, oil, which I change ever 5000 miles now. I then did a full cooling systems overhaul, which had been started by the previous owner, and followed many of mangos maintenance guides. The first month was frustrating and pricey but I have had to do so little to my car after, preventative Maintenance is worth it!

I drove the car for quite awhile without changing anything else. She had no body roll whatsoever and stuck into the turns subliminally.

May 2012-
I was coming home one day and went over a bridge in my area, there are significant dips before and after the bridge and I knew I had to go slow and Avoid them so that I didn't scrape. As I got off the bridge the rear of my car started shaking Heavily. I pulled off to the side and saw the drivers side rear tire was shredded, not flat, but shredded. Apparently the dip had been enough for the tire to hit the wheel well lining and obliterated the tire. Of course my area is quite rural and they didn't have a tow truck low enough to take my car in the approximate vicinity. These idiots apparently didn't even have boards either! I finally got my car towed to a local garage, that was literally a half a mile from where I was, and got the tires replaced. I learned at that instant that this car demands respect and can't be beaten on. From then on I have babied this car. I then raised her up some more

Summer of 2012-
This is when I started to repair the car.
I replaced the head unit since the factory one didn't work. I installed a kenwood and it was such a pain in the *ss. I wish I took the time to do research and get a dynavin and move the a/c panel down.

Not to long after, I found out the car had Angel eyes installed, they had just been disconnected. It took me forever to reconnect them since they were cut and the engine bay had a rats nest of wiring. I loved the look of them when I reconnected everything.

I then wanted to upgrade the hids in the car. The car had projector fog lights as well, so I molded 8k hids into those and the installed 8k hid low beams in the headlights. They were definitely blue. After a week, one of the crappy 8k low beams burnt out. I reinstalled the 6k hids that were previously in the car that matched the angels eyes and was satisfied. I took the fog lights out not too long after.

August 2012-
The rear deck speakers were blown and instead of replacing them, I installed 2 12inch subwoofers in the trunk. I researched them and made sure they would fit in the center of trunk and slide in against the rear seats. Wiring them was a b*tch. DUMBEST MODIFICATION EVER!!! They shook my car to death. I took them out and sold them for more then I paid new to some dumb high school kid. They looked nice at least. With the money I bought an entire set if Bavarian sound werks speakers. What a better sound!

My car had this silver and black theme going on, titanium silver outside with the black semi-gloss vinyl roof and carbon fiber vents and then the interior was black with the headliner being a light grey. The seats were also grey and black and the trim was all brushed aluminum that was really beat up. I have continued this two- tone theme in all the modifications I've done and it's one of my favorite things about the car.

I decided to eliminate the "fish bowl" look by getting a nice carbon- ceramic 20% tint all around. The guys did a great job and it has never bubbled or faded. Lifetime warranty too. I thought it added to the two-tone theme but sometimes I think it's too dark.

I decide to complement the window tint with smoked corners. A bird hit my drivers side corner light and it needed to be replaced, it was a big bird. Anyway I went with a smoked corner. To make it worse the screws were stripped and I had to replace them to get the lights to sit flush with my headlights. When the corner lights aren't on they are really dark. They match the tint, and I don't like it. When they are on, they glow orange and it looks great. I chose not to get my rear corners smoked because I thought it looked ridiculous. So I know I'm not matching and I will probably go back to clears in the front.

Winter 2012-
For Christmas I got a few goodies for my car.
Khoalty angel eyes and carbon fiber pedals.
The angel eyes are so bright and it looks much better then the old ones.
The pedals have an awesome look and are more textured and slip-resistance. Both were easy to install.
My winter project on the car was the interior. I started with the back seats. The rollbar goes right through the sides of the seats and the leather was torn up and hideous looking. I had the upholstery redone so it hugged the roll bar yet still looked oem.
I repainted the rear deck lid which had been colored purple due to sun exposure.

Are you running spacers? If not, I think it would look really good on your 3.

Looks good. I would lose the banner, it detracts from the cleanliness.

Great progress so far hood looks great, and like someone said spacers would make it much more aggressive

i have installed my headers and they sound great! i have a rogue de-resonated exhaust so its loud.

i then coupled the full exhaust with an active autoworks tune. it was pricey but the gains are definitely noticable.

i installed some very nice corbeau fx1 pro seats and they look great.

check out the links for the bumper. the project was so long but came out so well.

i bought a csl trunk and it should be here by the end of the week. i plan to have it painted but i want to leave the lip and license plate recess carbon fiber. any other suggestions?

here are some pictures pre-csl bumper
