How bad are energy drinks, and why?

I've been an on and off energy drink addict for a couple years now, and have always wondered how bad they really are for me. I can't stand coffee, so this is my alternative to waking up in the morning.

For instance, I can't get enough of the orange Monster drinks, which claim they are 50% juice. Have I fallen into a sneaky marketing campaign thinking it's "not as bad" as others?

Anyone that says juice is good for you is an idiot in my opinion. All the vitamins and minerals are in the skin or fleshy parts, juice is just processed fructose, empty calories that add up quick + spike insulin.

That being said, energy drinks are juices twisted cousin. Not only do they contain caffeine and sugar (which dehydrate you, and you drink more garbage because you are still thirsty) but sodium, acids, colouring etc. essentially when you drink them you get a) more thirsty and b) more hungry. Oh and the "energy" lasts for about an hour and then you crash from sugar / caffeine spike and are worse off than you were lol.

Gotcha. I knew they weren't good for you, just didn't really know why.

I'll be kicking this habit to the curb from now on

They're bad for you. The amount of sugar alone is crazy.

Keep drinking it and your kidneys will want to kill you.

stick to coffee if you need caffeine or tea. They do not dehydrate you. Think about coffee's second ingredient. WATER.

"Conventional wisdom might be all wet. Here are some of the surprising facts about hydration
Myth: You need to drink eight glasses of water every day.
Fact: No one's sure where the so-called 8-by-8 rule came from, says Heinz Valtin, M.D., a Dartmouth College medical professor and author of two studies on the origin of the theory that the human body works best on eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. The truth is, your daily requirement depends on your diet, size, and unique body chemistry. To determine how much water you should drink, weigh yourself each morning for 3 to 4 days in a row - pick a time other than your period to rule out hormone-induced water retention. If you lose a whole pound in a day, it means you came up short on liquids the day before. Drink a pint of water or juice first thing in the morning for every pound you've lost and adjust your daily intake until your weight is steady.
Myth: Tea and coffee dehydrate you.
Fact: Down two venti house blends and you'll visit the ladies room often enough to earn a VIP pass. But despite its speedy exit, the liquid in your favorite morning caffeine boost still counts toward your hydration goal. After all, it's basically water, unless you muck it up with flavored syrups or dairy. "Caffeinated beverages do not dehydrate you when consumed in moderation, that is, five cups or less per day of coffee, tea, or cola," says Lawrence Armstrong, Ph.D., professor of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut and author of Performing in Extreme Environments. In fact, Dr. Armstrong says that any fluids you ingest will help keep your cells saturated, including juice, iced tea, or soda. (Just keep an eye on the calorie count in order to wet your whistle without widening your waistline.)

Actually it's the caffeine & sugar that really makes it bad for you. It has higher doses than an average cup of coffee. I prefer Vanilla Chai Tea.

While caffeine is natural, it can also cause problems when you drink it in excess amounts, ie: heart disease for one. It's fine in moderation and is actually good for your heart. ( I was speaking in high amounts at one time, over time)

I used to drink the sugar free ones fairly regular, and those are still pretty bad for you compared to the full flavor varieties.

If I'm in the market for one nowadays I drink Nuero Sonic. No artificial flavors, colors, etc. Minimal amount of sugar along with some vitamins and various amino acids. It's still not "healthy" but it's much better than the 32oz cans of Monster, lol.

Edit: Or these if I can find them..... http://www.braintoniq.com/braintoniq/ingredients.php

Caffeine isn't terrible for you unless a person is ingesting massive amounts of it on a daily basis. Nuero Sonic has 50mg per bottle and BrainToniq has zero. Like I said, I don't drink either of these on a regular basis. I'll typically have about 2 cups of green tea per day and maybe a cup of coffee, but that's about it.

I play COD and that's about it right now. You?
