If I remember the layout correctly, I can't see that you would have to. Everything should be done from the top and bottom of the engine bay.

I'm not sure if many people have done it before, but here is my suggestion:

If you are using the DIY from a standard 330 and it does not involve removing any of the suspension components on that DIY, chances are that you will not have to remove the half-shafts. With that said, just take a look at what you have to do and map it out a bit.

ok for those who just assume and post random stuff on this board without doing any research is a real PITA. HEADERS FOR 330xi do fit you have to install the rear header then drop the engine mount in then bolt up the front header then while dropping the motor you need to line up the mount... WOW DONE headers installed on 330xi!

That's exactly how you install them on any E46...

so in a reg e46 non awd, you can't install the motor mount from the bottom? you have to drop it in from the top? after the first header is in then you drop the mount from the top in non awd? really? figure there is room to get it in from the bottom no? i called super sprint they said the headers fit but they don't know how etc. i called turner motor they said they won't fit no matter what.... i got them in and called TMS to tell them how to get the headers to fit and to stop telling their customers that they don't fit when indeed they do seems like a lot of misinformation is floating around.

Wow I'm surprised, I was always told that for the xi's the axles would need to be removed. Learn something new everyday, thanks for that. You should have made a DIY writeup.

I can confirm (because I've done it 3 times now), that you don't have to remove axles. You just need to remove the 4 bolts from the square front subframe and the passenger side engine mount. Then, by jacking the engine up slightly and pulling down on the back of the subframe, you will gain enough room to slide both headers out. To install, you just reverse all of this; however, install is much easier because you don't have those massive cats to worry about.

Are you guys lifting the motor with a hoist or something after you remove the motor mount? And how do you go about unbolting the headers from the head? Is this done from the bottom, or from the top with the motor lifted a bit?

Also why is everyone lifting the headers out from the bottom? Can't they be lifted out from the top?
