2 Kicker L7s VS JL W7

Hey, before i was running 2 10inch L7s and it was booming. Today i hooked up my friend's brand new 12inch W7 and it wasnt as loud as the L7s. Is this right? I thought the W7 was suppose to be super loud. My L7s blew...

The W7 is made to be a clean, sound-quality speaker. A speaker is designed to reproduce sound, which the W7 tries to do as accurately as possible. The L7 is made to play loud. There's a big difference. Kind of like a BMW V8 compared to a Corvette V8. They're both V8s but they have completely different purposes. It also depends on what kind of amp you're using. A speaker will only play what the amp puts out.

And my L7s blew, both of them. The wire to the voice coils snapped. Ne clue why this happened? Im thiking its cuz of my box, its not exactly airtight. Also i ran about 1000 watts to each sub, played it hard.

Hopefully you don't take this the wrong way...

From everything I heard about JL's the difference is your amp. The W7 is pretty power hungry and the lest expensive amp that I've ever heard of pushing it is made by JL. I'm sure you have decent amp, but JL's are pretty picky. This is the only reason I don't have one. To get them to sound like they're designed to, you've got to put some cash into them JL spec box, JL spec wattage rating ( and believe me every "1000watt" amp is not the same") etc.

More importantly,  Sorry to hear about you L7's...may they rest in pieces:sad:

The W7 is still loud as hell. It probably wasn't set up properly.

Is the W7 bridged internally? I only saw one voice coil, what is the impedance, (ohms) that its sending out??

The W7 is a 3ohm subwoofer. I believe S12L7s max at 1000 watts, so you probably were overpowering them. Having your box not 100% sealed is also not a good idea. Once you're running over RMS to your sub, the sub is going to get more distorted the higher you go. Don't think if a sub is advertised to take 1000 watts peak that you can run 1000 watts to it. At 1000 watts, the voice coil will melt and you'll have a dead sub. The replies about the W7 are right on. It is one picky subwoofer. When you get a W7, you need to get a box built to spec or else it won't sound good. There are diagrams included with the subwoofer that tell you what kind of box it needs. It does need dual layer MDF. Also it needs a pretty good amp. Probably the best mainstream amp would be the JL 1000/1, unless you want to go with Brax or Zapco, but I think the 1000/1 will work wonders.

So if its giving my amp (kicker kx1200.1 rated at 1400 watts rms @1ohm) a 3ohm load, then i would only be giving it 466 watts rms?
