Buying nice 330i

Hey everyone, I am new to the world of BMW, I've had quite a few vehicles before and am very excited to get into an E46 330i my question is, the gentleman selling the car is asking 8,700 firm. It's a silver 2001 330ci w/sport package with 105,000 miles all options and they all work. The car seems to be well taken care of and the owner has some recorded maintenance such as a valve cover gasket replacement as well as a the thermostat replacement etc. by kbb the car lists as 7,800 in very good condition. The seller is including a set of m3 rims with tires also...

I appreciate the time and all opinions are welcome, also if there is anything I should be looking for please let me know as I am new to BMWs

Thanks all!

Don't pay a premium unless everything has been done.. as in, everything. VCG and T-stat is nice, but it's only a start. Remember, used cars depreciate a little every day, which means that the buyer always has the upper hand. Patience pays

In addition to the VCG and thermostat, check for replacement of the following:

expansion tank
coolant hoses
water pump & pulley
drive belts
front control arm bushings
front struts
rear shocks
fuel filter

If not already replaced, all of these will need replacement immediately or very soon.

If you like the car, buy it. The price is not outrageous.

thanks everyone, aesthetically, inside and out the car is a 9/10. He has recorded maintenance for the thermostat and some cooling system maintenance, but he only had a receipt for the VCG, he stated that he performed that labor by him self. The car is all original and he has everything, including the tool kit that comes in the trunk. while driving, the suspension sounded proper on our terrible michigan roads as well as no sounds bad wheel bearings etc.

Should I take the car to a bmw dealership to have a road ready inspection performed as well as maybe a compression test? the car pulled strong, much stronger than a 330I sedan that I drove at a dealership (which was aesthetically a 7/10 by itself)

oh and also, the car was 100% factory original, no modifications.

thanks again in advance

i just started reading up on the auto transmissions. What should I look for or feel for when driving to show signs of either a well preserved transmission or a problematic transmission

It sounds like you really like the car, which is great!

There is no harm in getting a PPI done. It will more than likely confirm what you already know, but on the off chance there is a well hidden problem, you'll be glad that you spent the $200 or so!

Compression test... again... can't hurt... but that's a bit unusual on these cars. Unless it was a relatively high mileage (200k+) E46, or you have suspicions, I see no need to do that test.

YMMV.

Around $1000 in flawless condition. Are they staggered or four front wheels?

If the car is really clean, it's worth it, but you can always offer less.

yea I did, he told me they are the same width. So as far as the wheels themselves being that its not an M3 that should be ok right. Again im not looking for a race car, just a nice daily driver!

Yes, that means they'll all fit the car. If they were staggered, the rear wheels would not fit your 330 with normal sized tires.

They're probably worth about $800, but you can also install them on your car!

I would buy it, i paid back in 2008 18k for 2001 330i sport pkg w/winter pkg and it had 36k miles titanium silver. I took it to bmw had it tested and no worries 41/2 years later i replaced all the heating hoses water pump belts pully and control arms, barkes disc and brake pads, tires & rims (per choice) most of this was just that once one thing goes i get crazy and just go all the way today the car has 51k miles and i just replaced the radio (business radio) with the dynavin radio with gps installed metal pedals back up camera, and i love this car and it's my wife's.
