If it is a Canadian car, not necessarily. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=610766

This is correct. But there are converters that will take the HU speaker out and convert into RCA line level inputs for an amp.

Do you really want to introduce so much coloration into your audio? I love my music so I would not. Each conversion introduces artifacts into the signal that would make you hate your sound system.

I guess it's a choice of preference. I like my music. But I like the look of stock Stereo more. The only other head unit i would consider is the dynavin. but that's a little pricey.

Agreed. It is a tradeoff. But stay away from Dynavin. Chinese crap with horrible DACs.

Best upgrade is an aftermarket headunit, with built-in pre amplifier.

Brings your stock speakers to life, and cheapest/most rewarding option.

Think about it this way.. they have a 4x50 W integrated amp in a miniscule chassis. Compare that to even just the power supply of a good 50 W amp. About the DAC: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?p=14760160

Two of my midbass speakers were torn badly, one tweeter didn't work at all. I don't think an aftermarket headunit could have done much with them.
My problem with most aftermarket headunits is they look like they don't belong in our cars. Some look like alien spaceship take offs.

I used a Digital Designs DD audio component set Cs 6.5 in the doors. Great sounding, cheap and as small as the stocks.

6.5s all around. You need an adapter for the front, but crutchfield sends you a free one. Just make sure the speaker basket is not too deep.

Well ya. If you want good sound, get something else. Jbl, focal, mb quart, Boston acoustics, Polk are all actual audio companies.

I'd have to disagree. I don't think there is one thing that elevates the stock system very much.

The stock head unit's output distortion (sound) is roughly on par with that of aftermarket head units. And if you're splicing harnesses, you aren't using the clean pre-amp signal from the head unit. The only way to do that would be to take the RCA outs and figure out a way to get them to run into the stock amplifier. However- even on a good head unit- 4-5v is not high enough for our amplifier. It's expecting more.

As far as speakers- go to a store and pick some speakers out that you like (double check that they'll fit first). In general, it's not a good idea to make statements like "Rockford Fosgate is good" or "JBL is bad." Both companies have good and bad speakers. You shouldn't stay away from any one brand just because someone said so.

The exception to that is some companies like Hybrid Audio Technologies, DLS, and Hertz who arguably do not have any speakers that sound bad.

Actually any upgrade would elevate the stock system noticeably. It sounds like crap.
