Cheapest legal way to get Windows 7

WinXP is really getting old and time to upgrade.

I want to buy a legal copy or a legal key because I don't want the headache of having it constately telling me "YOUR COPY OF WINDOWS ISN'T GENUINE", and miss out on the software updates and get stuck with viruses.

on eBay there are a few individuals selling the product keys from defective laptops for around $20-30. Wondering if those will work? Do I just download the ISO from Microsoft and use that key?

I can get you a Win 7 Pro key for $50. You supply the installation media.

Get an OEM cope from Fry's or Newegg. I wouldn't trust the keys on ebay but it might work.

Most universities sell them cheap (10-30 bucks) at the bookstore.

You can still update Windows 7 without a key entered. All it does is just pop up asking you to activate. It does not block you from updates. Getting a virus is almost always a user problem.

The easiest/cheapest way I've found that's 100% legal and reliable is a builder-edition copy. Newegg has it for $140 for Win7 Pro SP1. You'd have to backup your data, but that's what I did for my computer.
