Does the machine start at all? If does then create own Recovery disc then use on new HDD if not then Windows 7 (assuming 7) can be *legally* downloaded and burnt to disc then used on new HDD, as the recovery soloution will also contain a large software build I would use the MS (plain) disc anyway

Link http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technol...download-links

The HP disk check is hardware and gospel

CheckDisk is Windows built in disk check and is very good at repairing disk software issues (I always run if after a cleanup, incorrect power down etc)

Most Windows 7 era PC's are "7HPx64" Windows 7 Home Premium x64 bit and the direct link is here http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso

The rectangular sticker on the bottom of your lappy (possibly under battery) is entered mid way though set up

Highly recommend some DVD-R media *Some* recovery solutions work on CD-R but I'd say pop and go grab some DVD-R's if you possibly can will make life easier even if RS does accept CD-R's

Also look in your start menu shortcuts, there should be some HP links that have "recovery" in them. Failing that most OEM's have a .pdf manual with recovery guide (normally) in the back

At this point you have backed up your data right? Not many get the luxury of a failing (rather than dead) disk to get busy backing up!

Sometimes it will tell you what is acceptable, the trend is to need bigger (DVD-R or even USB sticks) so I would deffo pop out in your nice motor to any where that stocks good quality DVD-R (of course that's another whole debate!) In a way you might as well use the Lappy until it dies as replacement is on way anyway! (Just create recovery or download the .iso first)

Also try to create a factory image type thing, a backup will of course backup but with all the crap you have now, A factory image is like an excuse for a fresh start.

Sorry typing fast

I would try to create a factory fresh set of discs (you will need multiple DVD-R's and if allowed *many* CD-R's)

Some recovery solutions have the difference between a factory restore set and a backup set (i.e a backup of what you have now)

I always backup data (pics music docs and homework) then use the Factory restore solution. It's a way of having a clear out.

i could restore the lap back to factory but, i'd rather keep using as is , when it craps out it's done anyhow

Are you able to create factory restore discs? Do that and then you are ready (with a PH1 driver) when the new drive turns up.

(Philips Head #1!)

You can copy from one to the other, newer connections are SATA so you could get a SATA-To-USB system. I would just backup user files and use factory recovery discs on the new HDD though

Yes, you can copy the whole drive. Refer to my earlier posts, that's what I was suggesting you do.

Good luck and keep us posted, just make sure you have backed up or copied any data on the drive. For example if you use Outlook the database is not in the "home" folders.
