Hitachi is fine... no need to generalize about brands. They all fail.

Very much, last year or so have RMA'd or replaced 3 WD drives, two 2.5" WD Blacks and a 3.5" Sata the two 2.5"'s were both less than 3 months old.

HDD's only exist in two states Dead or dying. This is why we have three copies of data 2 onsite and 1 offsite.

I agree, I have multiple backups of my information. I've bought "better" drives before and still had them fail within a year. A warrant is great, but if you don't have a backup, it can easily cost thousands to get that information back.

If you don't feel like building go for an ASUS or a Lenovo U-series.

Check for deals on www.deals2buy.com
They have pretty good deals on Lenovo laptops and those are good quality too.
some sweet coupons there for lenovo

I believe we have a Lenovo employee or something on this site who offers huge discounts on some models once a year. He posted a link or new thread maybe a week or so ago. Sorry but I do not remember his name.

Stock does update often, so unless in a hurry keep looking. Also Lenovo recently changed keyboard styles for the T430 W530 etc (420, 530 and below still have old keyboard)

A full price Thinkpad does cost more, so if you can find an outlet or coupon deal (like Grande D's) then go for it. They all have a complete strip down guide and unlike a cheap laptop you can always access HDD and Ram (Some Dell laptops are unable to access the HDD unless you take the whole thing to bits!)

I would get this one if in the States http://outlet.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary...5&Code=4180X05

Yes, the site already has delegation and now we added deeper discount eCoupons. All eCoupons should trigger in the cart once you get there.
