When you get the new drive, test it with same HP bios test as the one that failed DST (DriveShortTest) before. You can also check with Manufacturer tools but this normally needs AHCI turning off and recent BIOS's don't always have this option.

If you do get bored with HP, you could get your own HDD or even SSD, SSD's are much faster but price per GB is much higher (so if you hoard data, HDD still best)

My lenovo (1.5 yo) is giving me issues now as well. I think its the hdd as well... it shots off while booting up or it will freeze.

Laptops are all the same. They use same **** parts. My parents hp works like a charm and is just as old.

I made an Indian woman cry after screaming at her. Called on a Friday night and they said no information could be taken because their system was down. Same story Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night, I was SCREAMING at the woman about how they're a computer company but it takes 3 days to fix an internal computer problem. All I was calling for was to get either a shipping label or box to send my pc in for service. Told her to get a pencil and write my address on a label manually them send it to me. She started crying lol

OP where did you purchase your laptop? If online, then you can't expect anyone to get away with just saying "send me a new hhd because mine is malfunctioning". This would cause all kinds of fraudulent claims.
In this case I think best resolution would be for hp to provide a free shipping lebel and send it with the new part. And charge you if you fail to send the old one.

If you purchase anything through a major retailer, they ship the item for you and have it fixed or repaired..

My Lenovo that i purchased through newegg.com had the screen seperating right down the middle of the edges (literally splitting open), they took my info and had fedex come pick it up from my house. 2 weeks later I had it back fixed.

People in North America don't even realize how good we have it here when it comes to warranty and satissfaction issues. Most businesses in Europe will laugh if you ask for a refund after 7 days.

If their policy is to have the old part first, I suggest you get them to ship you a box and a label or send ups or fedex to pick it up from you.

If you agree to ship it back to them after you get your new HDD, you can have a fully functional computer and be the bigger man in this situation. In my book, a $3 shipping cost or small inconvenience is not worth losing any hair over.

their customer support is the best ive seen by any company. youll never have a headache should you need to call them

yeah, never had a problem with their mb, only mb i used for builds

learned my lesson for sure, spend at least $850 on a lap, not $550
