bulb out (headlight) icon is coming up....no bulbs are out!

hey guys, ok so the basics, I have a 2001 330ci, 207k miles, halogen bulbs. Friday coming from work (headlights NOT on), the headlight out icon comes on for the driver's side....I go buy a bulb, the old one was burnt, installed it, light went out. So today the icon came back on, got home....all bulbs are burning...tap on the hl assembly....wiggle the bulb...the icon goes out. It then came back on so I go diag'ing it:

I swapped sockets, from side to side and the icon stayed on for the driver's side...so the icon didnt follow the socket....installed all new bulbs (all four), it is still coming on. I checked the fuses and found two fuses for the light module (not really sure what that is....but they were good)

thoughts? what else to check?

thanks guys!

good point. I just went out and checked it, all lights were working and the icon was out.....next time the aticon comes on i will check the side light. BUT --- the icon comes on when my hl switch is in the off position (doesnt have auto) and in that position the running light is not on, the only bulb that is on is the daytimes running light, (the inner bulb in the hl assem) it has me stumped...and annoyed!

I believe it just measures resistance in the circuit, ie no sensor.

Check your license plate bulbs. Same thing happened to me. Took me awhile to figure it out!

The ground, to those of us on this side of the pond. You can use a voltmeter, or trace the wires. I think it's on the inner fender somewhere.

Look inside the connectors of the lights to see if there is any signs of them being burnt. The corner lights are also turn signals, so this would explain why the fault indicatore comes on even if the light switch is off.

If you replaced the corner lights with LEDs, this is a problem. Or, it could be a problem. If you replaced a bulb with a non-standard bulb, this could also be a problem. If the bulb socket is corroded, this could be a problem.

yea, those are all good points...all the bulbs are stock, I swapped sockets from side to side and the warning stayed on the drivers side. (icon didnt follow the socket) new bulbs (h7 GE's) all four (inner and outter in the hl assembly) I know mis-matched bulbs can cause the icon to come on (or new and used) the last thing to check is to pull the turn signal bulbs and check them, maybe swap those sockets (if they are swap-able <-- is swap-able a word? )
