After major traumatic events it's typically human nature to be paranoid, display knee jerk reactions, etc.

I agree. But part of that sensitivity is temperance and proper evaluation of a situation. Calling in a report that a gun is in the vicinity and it was really an umbrella is a direct result of inaccurate observation and jumping to conclusions.

These traumatic events are exceedingly rare (mass shootings), especially at schools. There's no reason to think or predict that one will happen all the time.

They'll put a school on lockdown if anyone reports a gun near campus, whether it's true or not. Famous one around here happened at App State University.

Guy broke his door, didn't wanna pay for it, so he said some burglar with a gun kicked down his door. When they asked him which direction the burglar ran, he arbitrarily pointed towards campus.

School was on lockdown for 3+ hours, helicopters and SWAT called in.

The kid's lawyers highly suggested he move far away from App State because he was getting death threats.

Bomb threats happen sometimes at the public schools here during exams because some lazy ass didn't study enough. They have to take it seriously every time.

also, the local "scanner" page just posted another similar incident of "someone spotted with a gun" we will see how this one pans out.

I dunno...I just see this as people jumping to the wrong conclusions way too easily.

For instance, look at me. I have a fairly large arsenal of weapons. Occasionally, I will be seen walking in or out of my apartment (where I live alone) with rifle cases or boxes of ammunition, some up to over 1000 rounds. Clearly, I must be a budding serial killer and I'm stocking up to make some sort of attack somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if some idiot called me in and suggested that, which would then require a police response and a possible SWAT team entering my unit. They'd train weapons on me, put me in danger, etc. all because some idiot got the wrong impression and wasn't minding their own damn business.

Point is, this paranoia people are living under at the moment is totally ridiculous. I think they should exercise better judgement before calling stuff in.

That's what I was saying.

Once the call of "dude with a gun" goes to the PD, they basically have to react. And if it's a school, that means lockdown.

It would be great if our society would forgive them for reacting in a more restrained manner until they know for sure what they're dealing with. But if they don't hop to and it DOES turn out to be a nutjob with a gun (the 1:1,000,000 situation), the PD will be charbroiled for not doing more as soon as they got the call.

i understand the school's reaction. hell they just about **** a brick if they see a gun shaped pop tart.

i agree with david though, people are getting even more ridiculous.

2) In West Virginia, violation of their mask law is only a misdemeanor, and protection from the elements is specifically permitted.
