Airline Now Charges Passengers By Body Weight

Samoan Airline Now Charges Passengers By Body Weight
http://gizmodo.com/5993258/a-samoan-...by-body-weight

Bad news for those carrying a few extra pounds: Samoa Air has become the world's first airline to introduce a pricing policy which charges passengers by body weight. Time to diet.

The pricing policy will see passengers enter their weight along with the weight of their baggage at the time of booking. The combined weight will then be used to calculate their fare-and the values will be verified at the airport, with customers being weighed. Speaking to ABC Radio, chief executive of Samoa Air, Chris Langton, explained:

"This is the fairest way of travelling. There are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage or anything - it is just a kilo is a kilo is a kilo."

The new policy is motivated by the fact that Samoa Air's fleet is largely made up of small 12-seater aircraft, which see passengers and baggage accounting for a much larger proportion of total takeoff weight than bigger airplaines. That, and the fact that Samoa has a serious obesity problem.

Prices will vary between $50 to $200 per 100lbs, depending on the length of the journey, but Samoa Air claims that a normal-weight family will actually see a reduction in their fare. The real question, though, is whether this may set a precedent that other airlines latch onto.
How long before U.S. based airlines start doing the same? And, if you can't fit it one seat properly, you should be forced to buy another. Why should I suffer b/c of your life choices?

U mad?

I'm sure this idea will take off in the US, which also has an obesity problem.

Makes sense when you think about it. All those huge people = more fuel burned.

Time to get some tickets for samoa air and file a discriminatory lawsuit.

maybe find a lady friend to fly with you that is heavier than you with a disability and profit.

How is it discriminatory? More weight on an aircraft = more fuel burned = more money that it takes to get to a destination.

What is the basis of your lawsuit? Private airlines are regulated by the FAA. The FAA has no rule on discriminatory pricing based on weight of the passenger. And if it did, all it would have to do is pass rational basis to not be a violation of equal protection clause. Or do you have another basis for suing that airline in US that implements a passenger weight limit?

If she's fat because she has a inflammatory diseases, and takes steroids, I think it would fly wouldn't it. Why pay more if she has a disability that causes her to gain weight. I mean Ive seen a case, where when couples fly, the ladies fly half off and man, that guy won lots of money.

edit:
I dont think my idea would fly, I wasn't being super serious just sayin' as there are a lot of folks who file frivolous lawsuits, and some of them do actually end up getting, even though sometimes not much, some money.
