How accurate is E46 fuel estimation? (KM/l on console)

Hey, so I have E46, and I noticed weird **** going on over past few days.
As you know there is 2 fuel modes: total distance in miles you will travel and KM/l.
Apparently mine seems to be acting weird, I could fuel up and it will stay 180 miles then it lasts for a good bit, quite nice distance and drops quite slowly. But when it reaches 150 miles, it starts to drop literally every 100 metres I drive on fast acceleration. Yet if I drive in 4th gear or 5th gear by shifting up at around 2000 RPM, it stays steady and ever rises to 155 or more.

The KM/l keeps showing on average 11 km/l when in high gear or 8 km/l when idle in traffic.

So what the hell? is idle really taking more fuel than driving in high gear?

Anyone had problem like this? Also does weather affect it?
