What would you do in my situation?
So I was recently told that our downtown office is closing and I have to go back to our "headquarters" from now on. Thing is, I've only been down here a month and a half and just moved knowing that I was coming to this office. They wanted me down here and with no warning they pretty much stabbed me in the back. How you ask? Now I have to either drive 50+ miles one way or take 2 trains to work adding up to almost 5hrs of travel a day. My travel expenses are either doubling with the train or if I drive it'll go from $160 a month for a train pass, to over $140 a week just in gas.
I'm not sure what to do at this point and I've exhausted all my efforts to work something out with the owner and my manager. I didn't hear a word about the office closing until I got down here. I was also told that the owner promised to keep it open for another year and try to make it work with a new manager. This is a huge stab in the back as they won't let me work from home at all, pay for me to break my lease, or help with travel expenses. I wouldn't make a huge deal about it, but I just moved and will have to deal with this sh!t until next Feb. My employer for the most part helps it's employees and does alot for them. Now with this, it's like they dgaf about who they're screwing over with this. I've contemplating just sucking it up and dealing with it and moving again next year. At the same time I'm sick of having a desk job and the whole work enviorment. I like the area I just moved to and don't want to have to pack up and moved because of my job. I don't know if I should deal with it or find something else closer to me. At my current salary and the amount I'd have to travel I'd consider taking smaller pay to raise the quality of life. Thoughts E46er's?

Yeah, I definently can't afford to quit right now. The owner and I used to be pretty tight, not as soon as I switched offices and this went down it's like nobody gives a sh!t

odds are they are having a really tough time financially if they have treated people right and now are acting kinda shady. they are probably in a panic mode trying to cut losses.
what kind of business is it? chicago is fvcking huge. commute for now, but start looking for work downtown.

Would you be opposed to leaving? Sounds like you're being jerked around. Search around for other opportunities closer to home

The highest paying salary isn't always the best position. Consider your happiness, your needs, and your health.

Company is in the NW suburbs. I live in Mokena. Only train by me goes downtown, then a mile walk to the next train which has screwy times so it's either I'm super early or super late. Same deal coming home. The owners brother in law is also my boss, I get thrown under the bus to cover him alot. Family car is like a plague in this place. Haven't started looking yet. Just found out last Monday and have been trying to come to an agreement with them on working something out. Just trying to weigh job security and pay vs quality of life. I do miss working with my hands. Always felt more accomplished back then.

It sounds like you have a decent skill set, and there's nothing worse than working a job that you hate. My suggestion is that you try and find a job that you like and is closer to home

That's what I'm thinking. They did good starting up, now they can't handle the food on their plate. All the managment rolls are held by family members or friends of the owner (which can do no wrong). The oppurtunity to move up is not there unless I wanted to be a sales rep....f that.

Thing that sucks is alot of machinist/ hands on jobs require alot of experience. I was at CAT just shy of two years before getting laid off in 09. I know I have the skills and know how, but I'm sure they're rusty at best. Wish I could get hit by a rich person's car or win the lotto........

1. If you stay there you can risk being "laid off" looks like the direction they may be headed.
2. Find another job closer to Casa 3. get on of these bad boys... |

That said, deal with the commute for a bit. See how it feels and explore other opportunities. Best time to look is while you are employed. |

Keep your job for now while on the backend looking for something more decent.

I'm originally from the area. I have alot of friends and family in the area. That and my rent is about half what it was in Arlington Heights. I looked around the city first but wanted to lower my cost of living and not be living ontop of people. Quote:
Sadly, I agree 100% When I got laid off it was damn near impossible to find work while out of it. That and the economy was crap back then.
