Throw your random car suggestions at me!

I need car ideas. Yay! Another one of those threads! By me! I'm pretty sure I've made a thread (or two) like this before, but this time I'm (more) serious. Why? The CPO warranty on my 335i is about to run out.

My experience with this car has made me very afraid to own it without a warranty and as such I am contemplating a move on to something else. Something different. What am I looking for? I don't know. I drive around looking at other cars a nothing strikes my fancy. Not even more expensive cars. Sure, I'd like a Porsche or a BRZ, but one is out of my reach, and frankly, the other seems hardly worth it to get into another loan for. So, brief checklist...

  • A bit less electronic nonsense maybe? I don't need my car to cut the engine power every time there's a bit of carbon buildup.
  • Simpler but not necessarily dumb! I still like power windows and seats and maybe even bluetooth.
  • But still fun. With some character. Not an Accord or Camry.
  • Decent build quality and reliability. I don't necessarily want to feel like I'm driving a plastic bag.
  • Low maintenance/repair cost. I don't mind working on cars myself either. As long as parts aren't hard to find or terribly expensive.
  • Max $15K. I don't want to finance again. That's a very hard stop.

I've already owned an E46, enjoyed it and would like to leave it in the past. I've rejected an IS300 in favor of my E46, so that wouldn't be an option either. The following two cars are high up on my list:

  • 2000-2003 Honda S2000 - It's fun. Looks good.
  • 2003-2005 Toyota 4Runner
  • 2007-ish Mini Cooper (are these reliable? I was kind of hoping not to see my BMW dealer again)
Obviously, these are not in the same category. I'm looking at everything and anything. Maybe even a Jeep Wrangler. Or a Miata. Maybe a Chevy Tahoe? Crown Vic with a manual conversion? OK, now I'm going crazy. I need help, though. I want a new (to me) car and I have no idea what to get.

I don't understand why people lease.

At any rate if it's just you, the S2k is a fun car. I would recommend driving one before pulling the trigger. I've been around them but never owned one. From what I've heard, reliable and easy to maintain.

What about a G35/G37?

A '98 M3 in good shape...or go back to an e30 M...or go back to a better e46...also maybe the M.

I'm just ignoring what you're talking about...this 'want to leave it behind' talk. You need to work at your relationship with the 3, just like a woman.

Silly talk...you want to consider something else? lol

You're funny!

Another vote for an E36 M3. As simple as you get and loads of fun. I'd really like to get another one, but it's not the easiest task to find one unmolested. The C5 Corvette is another car that's tons of fun if you can stand the shoddy interior.... but what a motor!

nissan altima SE-R (more hp and tq then a S52 or S50 E36 M3) under 15k, and with the gadgets you were looking for without the insane maintenance costs.

S2000s are incredibly fun and they are reliable too. Great choice. Won't give you problems and more fun than 90% of BMWs on the road. That would be my car if I fit.

Other options: certified Mini Cooper S, E36 M3, or a GTI.

A really clean e36 m if you like the body style, I personally love it, but I know not everyone does.

That's what I've heard, too. A friend owns one. I haven't driven one. I would before committing, of course.

And yes, it's just me, but then again it isn't. I always do stuff in groups and often I like to be the one at the wheel on a trip to a cookout or event. That's why that 4Runner jumped into the mix.

Maybe. They're good cars. They don't excite me very much, but for the money...

Technically, I'll still have an E46 since my dad got mine after I upgraded. But I do not want it to be my personal daily.

I see where you're going. The S2000 more or less fits the same criteria as those two minus the reliability/cost/quality issues.

No. Anything but that. Especially the 350z.

My vote would go to the S2000 or an E36 M3 if you can find one that is rape free.

You could always look at a Mazdaspeed 6

S2K is small. really small and annoying to try and drive two people each with soccer bags. I walk to work/bars/restaurants, grocery shopping so its perfect for me, but you might get annoyed easily.

I would not daily my car due to the low seat height and if I had to shift through traffic. Also, its noisy at freeway speeds.

And that is what has made me consider other cars. Suggestions?

Also, what problems did you have with carbon build up? I fear that on my 135

Speaking on the American truck topic - if you were to choose any, it should be a Tahoe. I've owned four of them and if/when I need another truck, that's exactly what it will be. With the new body style coming out soon, I'm assuming the current Tahoe can be had for relatively cheap. If you don't need to haul or tow, the MPG sucks and it's no fun... Obviously. Here's my old one for reference - I realize this may not be everyone's forte in fat American trucks, but they can look pretty neat.

EDIT: I can't speak on the R56 Mini's, but I had a race prepped R53 (2004) and that car had the absolute hardest life possible and was one of the most reliable cars. Very fun (with a quaife), DIY friendly, and obviously MPG's are good.
