Questions about Replacing Factory Radio with Newer OEM Unit

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at replacing the old Blaupunkt Business CD53 radio in my car with a newer OEM ALPINE unit that allows AUX inputs and MP3 playback. My E46 is a US spec and one of the first manufactured (12/98). I want to know if swapping radios is 100% plug-and-play or if there will be further modification involved. I've got a newer unit part number -65. 12-6 943 429 in mind that I'd like to replace the existing one with.

Make sure the manufacture date is after 07/04. The radios for the '05 model year and later are fully able to play mp3's.

'03 and later radios have the "mode" button.

Note: there are radios that have been repaired or refurbished and have '05, '06 stamps on them. Check the manufacture date. These repaired / refurbished radios are being sold as 05+ radios. To my knowledge, they haven't had the internals completely replaced, therefore, the radio is still the same radio functionally as it was when originally manufactured.
In order to finish FIRST, you MUST first FINISH !
