I do not think that an asset trading strategy using new exotic cars is likely to earn a return equal to the depreciation. It makes no economic sense and is irrational. If someone has done it in the past, I think it is best to regard it as anomaly arising out of luck or some temporary market condition for a specific car, not as normal.

In my state, you'd only have to pay sales tax on the difference in price between a car you've recently sold and the new one.

I've considered this before...spend maybe 30k on model that has high resale and swap it out each year. Since I don't put a ton of miles on my cars, I could probably resell for roughly what I paid, then find a new car for the same price. Taxes would be minimal and I'd get to enjoy a new car frequently. You'd have to find the right deals to make this worthwhile and also buy cars that are easy to sell quickly.

At EOY, if I could just own a beater, I'd only pay personal property tax on the beater, then sell it the first week of January for a nicer car.

I think it could be done, but I don't have the time to dedicate to pulling it off.

I wouldn't try this with exotics unless I was VERY familiar with the market, which I'm not.

You would get crushed on taxes in Illinois the second you register the car and transfer the title.

there are very few exotics that don't depreciate right away and most of the cars OP listed are not one of them. Only way to really break even on those are if you get them at almost wholesale pricing and then flip them on the retail side. People that own Ferraris are able to flip at cost or sometimes even a premium because it's almost impossible to just walk off the street and purchase a new ferrari anywhere if you never purchased Ferrari's prior. I have a friend that purchases Ferrari's new, drives for 5-6 months, and flips them. Even then I hear that Ferrari is trying to cut down on that tactic.

btw there are ways to get around the tax issue which varies from state to state. In NJ just as long as you're purchasing another car from a dealer you only pay taxes on the difference of the trade in value of your car and the purchase price of the new or used car . If your car is worth more than the car you're purchasing then you pay no sales tax

Why not buy lets say an AMG that will kick an exotic car in the ass and will look great even a decade from now? I'm thinking either E55,E63,C63 (my 3favorite ones) all 3 drive fantastically

Seen some 2010 e63s with some fantastic prices, they really depreciated fast.

Love that car.

My buddies uncle has a shop where they install NOS. He has a f10 M5 with like a 7 bottle install. Beast runs 7s with decent traction. I cant show you though, its in storage somewhere right now.
