So my driver's side seat heater caught on fire...

If my car is out of warranty is this now just my problem of replacing the seat? 2000 328i.

here's a pic http://imgur.com/8oNBBTf

I don't have a pic right now, I can take one. I did not get burned luckily because I saw the smoke coming out from between my legs while I was driving!

It looks about the size of a tip of one of my fingers. The car has about 130k on it and is obviously long time out of warranty, I just didn't know if this kind of issue was still something I could bring to BMW. Seems extremely unsafe to me.

I should mention also that the passenger's side has not caught on fire, but gets hot enough on high that it just about burns you if left on for any length of time.

interesting, warranty or not I'd like to see what BMW would say about it as that's obviously a safety issue. I wonder if BMW would waive the inspection fee and look it over for reasons of "safety"?

personally I would call BMW and use words like "safety", "faulty","hazardous", "fire" and "burn car down", "want to be sure" and see if they'll take a look.

Like BMW of NA? Or one of my local registered BMW dealers?

I'm not trying to scam anyone but this seems like an absolutely absurd and dangerous issue.

If the seat heater literally caught on fire, how did you put it out?
I would think soon as open flame was under seat that would be curtains batman...

This is a pretty hot issue. My confidence in BMW's design has melted a little bit. The engineer responsible for designing it should be fired. If my seat did this, I'd be burning mad and write a scalding letter to BMW. To further ignite their attention, I'd light up their warranty department with a bonfire of claims. Hopefully you get a warm response from the service department.

Also, lava.
