Whining noise...

Hi all,

I have a slight issue with my e46 320CI.

When I put my key into the ignition, and turn it to position 2 where all the dashboard lights come on...I get a small whining noise which lasts for about 2 seconds and goes away. Then, when I actually start my car, it whines again for 1-2 seconds and then goes away again. And then the car runs fine. No whining during driving.

It does it more when the car is cold, however it still does it when it is fully warm.

I can hear the noise from inside the car.

Can anyone please tell me what this can be, please?

All help is much appreciated

Thank you

Could be blower motor or maybe sap pump...or it could be one of your pulleys.

Try to isolate the sound with stethoscope or use a hose, like garden hose. I have a 5' section of 1" diameter flexible electrical conduit that works great--it's stiff so won't get sucked into fan and can't reach anywhere on the car. Looks goofy, though, so don't let anyone see you with it!

If either blower motor or SAP that noise could go on for years.

But, if it's a pulley, it could end very badly and quickly. Find the source of your whining and someone will tell you how serious it is.

Whining, or was it more like a groaning sound?

Yh, more of a grind/whine really. It is a squeaky, high pitch note.
