Shocks & struts blown?

'04 330ci coupe with 84K miles. Short of dismantling them, how do I determine if my shocks and/or struts need to be replaced? I've done the bouncing-each-corner thing, but it doesn't seem to be a reliable gauge. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks!

That push test doesn't really work with our cars. The springs are kinda stiff so it'll move very little. More than likely they ar e blown at your mileage.

But with your window down, going slowly over a bump or driveway you may hear a swooshing like noise.

It's more of a feel thing. When they start to go bad, the ride will get harsher and the handling will get worse. Steering can go loose also when the struts are worn out. Tires can wear funny also. If you don't have any of these issues, they are probably OK for you.

84K on stock original shocks/struts is getting up there. depending on your roads and how you drive has more to do than just mileage alone. three of the biggests signs they are worn out are:
car will bounce, as if it's only on springs.
tires will wear out oddly
oil will be leaking from a bad seal

at 84k on stock original dampers is probably a good guess it's time to replace. i can not, nor can anyone tell you without inspecting. but the odds are high they need to be replaced.

Thanks, All. I definitely hear that swooshing kinda sound with the windows down over speed bumps, so i suspect they're more likely than not shot (or at least some of them are). I've had the car for almost seven years now, so I haven't noticed a deterioration as much as I hope I will notice improvement with new dampers. 95% ready to pull the trigger on ST coilovers...

Do it! ST's are great for the price. I got them when my struts and shock blew.

Got some wheels & tires first, then decided to go the proper route and do some other needed maintenance before getting to the suspension. Figuring out what else I'll need, besides the coilovers themselves.
