F30's though... whole different ballgame. The new 328's are definitely a lot of fun to toss around
You realize the F30 has a softer suspension than the E90/92?? The F30 is way more boring than any E90/92.

You can't compare the F30 to the E92. Once the F32 comes out, then you can compare those two. Right now you can only compare the E90 and F30.

From my own experience with deciding between a used 2011 335i and a new F30 328i, I preferred the F30 much more. You have a lot more options for settings, and the technology is exponentially better. In comparing the E90 Sport package to the F30 M Sport, I honestly felt virtually no difference in handling quality. The F30 did feel better and more comfortable, but the handling was still there. The adaptive suspension is also an option that was not available in the E90, so you have different options for ride quality.

That's been my impression too through many test drives... but it seems that we're in the minority.

Although I wouldn't say just soft- bland and disconnected feeling maybe.

I've driven a 2011 e90 328i with the sport package. It was really nice but the car felt bigger then my ZHP..dunno was just a bit boring. Could have been the fact that it was an auto. Have yet to try an F30.

The car IS bigger than your ZHP. I've never driven the 328i (E90 or E92), but I have driven a handful of E92 335i's, one convertible 135i, and an E93 ///M3. My favorite was the ///M3, no doubt (GEE, I WONDER WHY...). But for a practical daily driver, the E92 335i took the cake. It was noticeably heavier than what I'm used to, but it was VERY comfortable. The torque felt wonderful and stock straight-line acceleration was more than adequate. When it came to the twisties, though, I started losing interest. Again, the heavy feeling of the car REALLY stood out. The more I carved into the turns, the more I thought to myself, "You know... a slightly upgraded suspension and a decent set of tires would make this car VERY fun to drive."
that's that.

TL;DR: E92 335i sport package with upgraded suspension would be a blast.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I have driven an F30 335i Sport and was impressed with the acceleration and overall comfort. I didn't get to do any real turning, though. Shame. Anyway... the automatic transmission felt far more responsive than the E90/E92's. Maybe I'm imagining things.

One thing that throws people off with the F30 is that it doesn't have the hydraulic steering. This has caused some ruckus because people claim that it has caused a more disconnected feeling with the car, and in relation to that, it makes the car feel like it can't handle as well. The suspension is slightly smoother for the sport models, and maybe you can call is "softer" in feel, but the handling is not sacrificed for normal street driving. If there's a difference, I personally would have to take my mom's E90 Sport and my F30 M Sport to the track and run then back to back to see the difference. On the street, I don't think the difference is all that quantifiable by my own standards. However, YMMV.

What steering does it have then? Electric?

I found the electric steering... odd. It was overly responsive at low speeds and felt far better once I got over triple digits.

My Ride: is my crack.
I wonder what would happen if someone actually got "disconnected" from there steering. After all we all know how fabulously bad BMW's can be with electronics sometimes.

Did it have the Dynamic Handling Package with the Variable Sport Steering?

I abstained from the E90 because I wasn't happy with it. I have found the F30 to be a huge improvement over the E90, which is what brought me back to a 3er. It is a great car, and the N20 and N55 motors are both excellent and very quick. It's a great car, but it's different than what people are used to with the E36 and E46 models. When you compare it to the competitors with the F30, like the Lexus IS, Cadillac ATS, Audi A4/S4, Mercedes C Class (and upcoming CLA class), Ford Fusion and Taurus, etc, you really start to whittle down the competition and the F30 becomes the best vehicle option. The F30 has topped most reviews. The two cars that compete with the F30 with any legitimacy are the Cadillac and Audi. I looked at the Cadillac and had a lot of issues with it that a lot of people have noted. The only car for me that was a solid competitor was the Audi A4 for the 328i, and S4 for the 335i. The A4 didn't compete sufficiently with the 328i, but the S4 was a lot closer.

I'm pretty sure there is still a physical connection between the wheel and the steering rack.

I like the 135 but it's too small for me.

It will take A LOT to get me out of a ZHP.

Would take a B8 S4 - other models are ugly IMO.

I compared the B8 S4, but ultimately there were things like the much smaller interior and the reported problems with the HPFP that turned me off of the B8. That, and the F30 has much better technology integration.
